You can suggest a map update if you want:https://mapcreator.here.com/mapcreator/

Here is partially owned by BMW, and BMW uses Here's data for the maps.

Agusits posted a magnet link earlier - but there doesn't seem to be any seeders there yet.

There's a post with a valid torrent on the F30 forum.

You can order one from the dealer. They are around $45. Get a lifetime FSC from an EBay seller for $10-20.

If you're not that computer savvy and find that the "free" downloads are above your skill level...you can purchase updated maps from your local BMW dealer ($$$$$)...or you can use the services of vendors like the one at the following link which is usually a more reasonable cost solution: https://bimmernaviupdate.com/.

BimmerNavUpdate.com offers multiple ways of updating maps...you can download the maps (after paying a fee)...or again, if your CPU skills are not that great...you can purchase a USB thumbdrive with the data already to upload to your BMW.

Good luck with whatever decision you make.

Just did the update myself. Upgraded from my 2015 maps to the new one and got a "lifetime" FSC code from ebay. For a first timer, the upgrade went extra smooth although there are some things to watch out for.

I'm not sure if a FAT32 usb drive is absolutely required but I had to find software that would format my USB3 128GB usb thumb drive to Fat32 (For windows look for guiformat by Ridgecrop.) I believe windows struggles formatting anything >32GB with Fat32. Once completed I figured it'd be a few minutes at best.

I extracted the ~24GB map to USB, took it out to the car and I turned on the ignition but didn't start the car. Plugged in the USB drive and after a few seconds the update was detected. I said yes to start. Before it started, I was prompted to enter the FSC code (I remembered there are no 1s or 0s, zeros to avoid confusion.) The code took.

The file copy/update process took almost 45minutes. I left the key in the car and walked back into the house and periodically checked on it. It completed while I was in the house and idrive had shut itself down, or the radio did at least.

I wish the drive in the car were usb3.0 compatible. Transferrign 24GB data took a while. The map updated successfully but I noticed there were still some changes missing - I've got a whole new interchange near where I live (new stepfordwivestypeofsurburbia) which didn't show up even though it's been completed for at least a year.

The process wasn't difficult but you definitely need to have some time to tackle it.

Process itself is very easy, as hlrzr mentioned it just takes a bit of time. Lots of resources out there regarding FSC codes (both one time and lifetime) as well as Map Updates. For those that can't get their hands on torrent files and/or don't want to pay the ridiculous amount from BMW, check out:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-Navigat...72.m2749.l2649

https://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-Navigat...72.m2749.l2649

Response time is roughly 20 min to get code/map link.

. You're a B R A V E man. There's no way I would leave the ignition on for 45 minutes without the engine running or a battery charger hooked up to the jump start terminals in the engine bay.

The last thing I need is the battery going dead or it's voltage going low enough that the car starts shutting down systems that might corrupt the data that's being uploaded.

You can see that I'm a big ol chicken when it comes to leaving a BMW on with only the battery powering everthing for anything over a few minutes. I''ve played with that fire before and got burn.

Plain dumb n00b luck that it didn't die, I guess. I had the headlights off and radio off after I left. Only thing left running was the idrive and the display turned itself off although the update kept going - i actually had to press the volume button for it to turn back on and I saw I was at 72%.

I appreciate your thoughts though - definitely wouldn't want the battery going dead happen to anyone.

Did anyone else have to use different USB drives to get this to work? I am using a 128 GB flash drive. I was prompted to update, but now the idrive is asking to insert USB #1.

That means that the car doesn't see the data. It could be some corruption somewhere. I had the same problem when using an older usb stick with a micro sd card. I bought a native 64mb usb3 stick and have had no problems.

Turns out I wasn't patient enough to wait for the FSC prompt. Thank you everyone for their posts and help with this

Clarification please!

If I buy a map update and a lifetime FSC bundle from a vendor, is the lifetime FSC only usable with the vendor I bought from or can I buy a map update from a different vendor next year without needing to get another FSC?

Life time code for your X5, no matter the vendor.

No need to buy map update, just follow the links on the forum to download. Many of us have done it.

I can PM you the person I bought from if you wish. Didn't have any issues here. As far as it being a lifetime code is up for debate.

Happened to me: bought one right after getting f15 but somehow several updates didn't require it, for whatever reason. A 1+ year later tried to install 2019-2, all of the sudden got FSC prompt and the ebay one didn't work. Wrote to the seller to no avail. I realize the transaction happened long ago, but still, kinda disappointing. Seller 'bimmer_usa' (formerly 'bmwdesignus').

EDIT: the code worked for 2020-1 map. Go figure...

That would be great. My fear was if I used a “non” BMW code it would lock up the map function or worse.
