Instrument Cluster
I wasn't aware of it before today, but it looks like there are at least two different instrument clusters available in the US. I was reading through BMWMN1971's delivery thread (http://www.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=913272) and I realized that his instrument cluster is different from mine. The one I have may come with the Head-up Display. Not sure.
The inside of the gauges are LCDs and are blank when the car is off. The gauges light up when the car turns on. Also, the bottom of the instrument cluster is a large LCD that normally displays the odometer, time, temperature. The bottom of the tach shows real time mpg and battery charging. The bottom of the speedometer is a bar graph showing vehicle range. If you have a nav destination set, it shows as a white dot in the range bar. You can also select what displays in the lower part of the speedometer. You can select range, mpg, calendar, speed limit info, etc. The upper middle part of the display shows safety info (lane departure warning, collision warning, etc.) You can also display a compass in the bottom center (see below). Here are some pictures: |

Interesting. My car does not have head-up display but other than the position of the temperature and clock it looks the same. I have the compass on the same place you have.
My question is regarding the way it looks during the day. Mine lights up in orange the same way your does but during the day the digital parts (time, temperature, odometer, etc...) are all in white but the instrument gauges (speedometer and tachometer) do not light up. I though they would also light up in white where they are in orange during the night. How is yours? Quote:

On AEC's, you can see a bunch of parallel lines which angle inwards. On BMWN1971's, the middle LCD looks exactly like the middle of my E70. TBH, I thought every F15 would have same look as AEC's but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Those parallel lines are part of the 'Lane Departure" option - they are supposed to represent the vehicles current straight line trajectory on the road - left or right vehicle drift outside the lines triggers a warning ....

Not the yellow lines. Look below the dials. There are red/orange parallel lines similar in angle to the lane departure warning.

Ok I see them now - not sure - certainly the cluster is either a full LCD vs analogue - the question is what option package (or combination) triggers the full LCD cluster - HUD or LDW?

That is what I don't like about BMW. They do not disclose all the details of what the "optionals" mean in the car. Not that I would pay for optionals I don't need just to get a different instrument cluster but ordering a $70k car and hope you get what you want is ridiculous.

I think it's the driver assistance plus or whichever package includes the speed limit info. You can see the speed limit info in the LCD area of the speedometer gauge. I don't think the analogue dials can produce color graphics in the small box where time is displayed . Regardless. I got both HUD and driver assistance plus. (Sans stop n go) so hopefully I get the LCD dials too. Will confirm next week during pcd

So, I went to bmwusa and did a test config. On the left, is when you tick the "Driver Assistance" (not plus) and the right is no Driver Assistance packages. Note the pic on the left shows the inward parallel lines.

$1900 for a different instrument cluster? This is the reason I buy BMW. It let's you pick what you need. The Driver Assistance Plus adds nice stuff for any techie lover but for a wife's car that will be used to commute kids to school and go to the grocery store I am convinced I did not need this add on.

Yeah I'm with you on that - I chose Surround View for $750 on my order - Driver Assistance Plus includes SV for $1900 - so the difference is $1150 - I left it off mainly due to the 'slippery slope' cost effect of getting carried away with the options :-)
