radio stays on when I get out of the car.

When I turn off my 2014 X5, the radio stays on. This is good, most of the time.

When I park in my garage at home, I don't lock the car. I'm afraid the radio could stay on indefinitely.

Is there a way to turn this "radio stays on after engine is off" function off? Or some other work-around?

Pressing the start button once turns the car off, pressing it again will turn off the radio and everything else.

It will also shut off after a while to keep from draining the battery, 5 minutes I think but could be wrong. But locking it is always your best option to make sure you don't forget that second push of the start button. Also preserves the battery. My wife used to leave her X3 unlocked occasionally and sometimes with her purse (and key) in the car. That drains the battery and I got the low battery warning, had to drive around aimlessly for an hour to recharge it.

I also read on here you can hold the start button in longer on the first push and it will shut off the engine and accessories, but I've not tried that. I'm just used to hitting it twice at this point, or once and locking the car.

hmmm. it seemed to me that pressing it again might start the car (again). but maybe only with my foot off of the brake? I'll try it.

Push start again WITHOUT pushing brake pedal, and then the car goes completely off.
Another option : lock the car and then unlock it. Like you I do not lock my car in the garage, could sound weird, but the explanation is simple : in the morning my wife is used to prepare me a breakfast and put it in the car before I go to work, and she doesn't want to have to search for the key ^^

I use to do this.

Control Display.
Switching off
1. "option" Press the button.
2. "Switch off control display"

Now I lock the doors, suppose to go into sleep mode.

This car is full of a bunch of "That is a good idea" kinda stuff that don't really work.
I mean at least give us an option of having the press the Start Stop twice with your foot off the break vs making it the default setting and unchangeable.
The second most annoying thing is of course the Phone Cradle Dock.

Funny, I just ten minutes ago told Siri she too was not as good as she should be. She didn't know how to respond to "you're a great idea, but not as well executed as you should be Siri." I believe the response was, "you're entitled to your opinion" and also a "sigh." I seconded the "sigh" lol.

On the door, most people lock their cars… so I don't think the second push is all that poor of a choice as default. If it went right off, so would the radio. Perhaps a better default would be to switch off accessory on first push, but leave just the radio on until the doors open, then all off, like most other cars do.

I am sure most of it can be coded. I don't know why BMW does not make it for free based on individual's preferences or available in iDrive.

Instead of pressing the start/stop button to shut the engine off and then again for electronics, Simply hold the start/stop button for a 1/2 second longer and it will power everything off. If you lock the car with CA it will also shut your radio off if you forget to double push or loooong push.

To shut the vehicle off, hold the button in for a half a heartbeat longer and everything should shut down. I could be wrong, as I don't have an X5 yet, but this is true of every previous, and current BMW that I have with the pushbutton start.

FWIW, I tried this on my F30 and it didn't work. Haven't tried the F15 yet.

Almost all other manufacturers have the radio turn off, if you open the door = smart.
Pressing a button 2 times to turn the radio off=plain stupid.

BMW has their own logic in many things, I just don't get why.

Yep -that's how the keyless ignition in my Audi works. On the negative side however Audi automatically turns the radio on when you start the car, even if you had it off when you last used the car. That's stupid.

That's how it works on my E93 as well, so at keast BMW is consistent with their illogic. Also annoying is that if you want to keep the radio playing with the engine off (for example if you're waiting to pick up your better half at the airport and don't want to idle the engine) it automatically turns off after about 5 minutes and you are forced to restart the car. That's annoying too.

BMW leaves the electronics on because it is the equivalent of turning off the engine and leaving the ignition on when we still used a key.

Others would complain if it went off immediately.
I agree there should be a menu item in Settings > doors/ lock

But meanwhile, this is what happens when the engine is shut off with one press:

> so long no door is opened the electronics will stay on and time-out automatically after about 8 minutes.
> if a door is opened and the car locked, the electronics go off, the car is locked and the alarm is activated (if equipped).

For those of you who

1) do not want to wait, want the electronics off *right* this second: simply press a second time or as mentioned above, long press when turning off the engine.
Obviously having the foot of the break and pressing the Start/ Stop button is how you start the car so here, the outcome will be the same, having just turned-off the engine notwithstanding.

2) do not want to have to press a second time (just 'cause...), the car can be coded to have the electronics go off after the engine is shut down and when the driver's door is opened.

Many people leave their cars unlocked in the garage and the car will drain its battery even if the electronics have timed-out.
The ///M cars do this very well.

If the dreaded, idiotic, useless push the button twice feature is the same on the new X5 as it is on the five series, a long push on the start/stop button will NOT turn everything off. Get a sense of how I feel about this feature? If you forget to push the button twice and walk into your house and your phone rings….it will be connected to your blue tooth in your car for the first eight minutes. Wonderful. Arghhhhhhh.

I agree with 5fix on this. On my 2006 E90 with Comfort Access the long push of the Start/Stop button will shutdown everything but on my new 2014 X5 with Comfort Access the long push technique does not work. Take your foot off the brake and push again to shut down.

There is one other option to consider when using the technique of locking and then unlocking the car to get the radio to shut off. There is an option in iDrive you can enable that will re-lock the doors if a door is not opened after you unlock the car.....so if that is enabled you may find the car locked when you return if you never open a door.

We have had the car for three weeks and couldn't be happier with the way it drives and comfort of the interior, and the awesome range of the diesel (600 miles on the first tank in mixed driving).

The annoyances are the disclaimer startup screens, the parking system warning, and the floppy door seals that keep getting folded back when I get out.
