2018 X5 - Less than a week old (from my purchase date), I get in an accident.

I'm so depressed!

I purchased the X5 this past Saturday, one of their demo/loaner models. Four days later, I'm part of a collision.

I'm on my way to work this morning, and living in Houston, traffic is typically heavy with stop and go traffic.

I'm stopped on I45 for a good 5 seconds and I look behind to check around and I see a Camry coming to a stop, but closing quickly. I say to myself "good", but I'm not certain the Camry came to a complete stop by the time a guy in a Jeep Liberty cleaned her clock.

The Camry driver has Geico insurance, with an expired drivers license (just last month). The Jeep Liberty driver is uninsured - dropped his coverage in July.

I can't believe it.

No airbags deployed or anything like that, but it appears I've got a decent amount of damage.

Looks as if the entire rear quarter panel will need to be replaced, as well as the tailgate (not hatch), and then the lower bumper. I'm not sure of any damage underneath (muffler seems have avoided contact) with my untrained eye.

I'll more than likely have to claim this under uninsured motorist through my insurance provider. Maybe I can obtain some diminished value since this involves a brand new vehicle (depending on true cost of repairs/damage).

Anyway, thought I'd vent. Thank you for reading!

I m sorry to hear that. Just FYI geico is known for cutting corners when paying a body shop. Make sure you take it to the dealership for repair. If it's repairable you can file a diminished value claim. I had a hit and run case at the beginning of the year that totaled my x1.

Who did you file your diminished claim with? Allstate sent me a letter saying they don't pay for Perceived diminished value...I'm floored.

Sorry to hear about this, the exact same thing happened to me after a week of ownership. Couldn't believe it, but luckily she was insured and super apologetic.

How much was your damage? Mine is a bit worse on the passenger side panel in that it popped about an inch.

The rest looks very similar. I'll try and post pictures if I can figure out how to do so.

Google “diminished value” , there are some, not a lot, of businesses dealing with this.

Your quarter panel popped out? Those are the worst repairs to do since it involves cutting out and welding in a new piece. It will never be as good as new. Plus for that to pop out, you took a good hit and more than likely have internal damage as well.

Allstate's estimate was $3899, my body shop was $4565, but that was only if they found damage to the muffler or under the bumper.

I did not have any qtr panel popping out though, that sounds like a bit more of an impact. Mine was pretty much a bump.

That totally sucks OP!
I tell my wife all the time that it's just a matter of time before we get rear ended by some distracted driver!! You see it all the time and we've had some very close calls. Pisses me off when I see people behind the wheel not focused on just f-ing driving!!

You are exactly right. I previously owned a F150 - and could "look in" vehicles. I'd say that, easily, 4 in 10 were on their phones during rush hour traffic.

I don't know if this was the cause, however, as it was still dark out this morning at 6:30am. I couldn't tell. The driver in the Jeep Liberty admitted that he looked away for a minute, then saw brake lights.

I'm told that the Liberty driver received a citation for no insurance and a controlled substance. Beautiful. Doesn't help me fix my perfect car back to being perfect.

I heard back from the Camry's (middle car) insurance agent, Geico. They are not going to accept responsibility. Of course they wouldn't. They are filing the claim as an uninsured motorist.

That will pretty much force me to do the same.

That's great news!

The geico claims person told me that the guy in the Liberty Jeep thinks he was doing close to 70mph right before impact.

I don't buy it, as there were not any airbags that deployed out of any vehicle. He probably got it down to around 30-40 when he hit, but not 70.

He was flying.....and there was not a thing I could do but watch, and try not to hit the car in front of me, which I barely avoided (paper thin).

A major buzzkill and PITA, but it will get all fixed up. We just took delivery of our X5M two weeks ago and the first few months after delivery you are even more conscientious of other drivers.

Get it fixed, and keep on driving. No need to be depressed))) Nothing major there. Just annoyance. $4k for those cars is nothing. Relax. It will be as good as it was before and your feelings toward this tin can will be the same. Scroll through my posts, i have the same thing past new years.

Sorry to hear that happened to you. There are a ton of really stupid accidents here in Houston. I just saw a video of people BBQing on the back of a pick up and handing out BBQ during rush hour while driving?!?!?

So glad to work from home now.

If there is ANY positive to gain from this, this might be a good time swap out the diffuser and/exhaust with the insurance funds.

Be careful with Geico as well. They are notorious for only approving aftermarket parts and not OEM.

That sucks man! Been there once before as well with another car. Hopefully you have full tort coverage so you can nail their insurance on "pain and suffering" for the anxiety this caused.

Allstate, the case manager filed a claim for me and the diminished value department called me 2 weeks after the car was totaled. Since they totaled the car I couldn't file a claim because it was totaled.

Okay, I've been researching sounds like I need to get a diminished value appraisal done and then hire one of these online companies to help with letters to Allstate requesting my claim.

It sucks when other drivers are doing everything but driving. Hope it pans out for you.
