Beveling new brake pads?

Reading through the service manual prepping for replacing pads and rotors on my x5 I noticed there’s a step for beveling the leading and trailing edges of new brake pads: https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f...kes/1VnXYhSLRO

Haven’t seen this in any of the DIY guides or discussed elsewhere on the forum but curious if this is common practice? Do I just take a metal file to the pads?

Bonus question: no guidance from BMW on cleaning the rotors before installing, I used CRC on my old cars, do the OE rotors not need to be cleaned first?

I recently did a brake pad change. My new pads came pre-beveled.

most brake pads come pre-beveled from the factory, weird how the instructions specifically mentions beveling the edges unless oem pads arent pre-beveled. also any brake cleaner will work on the rotor surfaces, just to make sure theres no oils/residues to possibly contaminate the new braking material.

The beveling is for noise prevention i believe. And some say to bevel the outer edge too, if your rotor has a wear lip on the outer edge.
You only need to clean rotors if they have oil or grease on them.

Thanks! I bought BMW pads and they weren’t beveled so I went ahead and added a very small bevel on each edge with a metal file. Used soap and water to clean the rotors.

Everything went fine, new rear brakes and rotors are in!
