I'm running Pirelli Scorpion ice & snow in 275/315 20's on the X6, just wondered for those who have this setup how do they perform in snow as some say there to wide for traction!? Also are you happy overall with the tyres as a winter setup? Your feedback and thoughts would be much appreciated

Good question. I've had my 20" off-set front and rear BMW wheels and the tyres for 2 years and it has not snowed since here in The Netherlands. Some cold frosty days and that is it. So can't answer the first bit. In general though it is hard to tell the difference between winter and summer set. Noise is no difference even at speed where I've been up around 140mph in Germany with the winter set up.

PS: Many many years ago I was raised in Elmdon!

So far I'm impressed with the Pirelli's, even if we don't get snow there still good for cold weather so all is good! I was just curious to see people's thoughts on these tyres and how they perform so enjoy the cold weather fellow Xdrivers

They perform very well. My only complaint is the wear, I'm actually chasing Pirelli on a pro-rated treadlife warranty. I only got two seasons out of the rears...the center sections are down to the wear bars, almost worn smooth. The tires we not overinflated, and the vehicle has been aligned. So far, I'm having little luck with the warranty. Very frustrating given their high cost. The fronts are probably at 60-65%, haven't measured tread depth. For now, I'm just running my Conti DWS06.

I've had mine for two winters now. Same size as yours. Just got them down from storage and they're sitting in my garage ready to put on for the third winter. I recommend them. I keep them properly inflated, and no unusual wear. I try to keep in mind that they are winter tires when they are on and take it easy on them, but there is very little change in feel and performance on dry roads. On snow or ice I am perfectly satisfied with their performance. This is probably the heaviest vehicle I've owned, so I have to keep that in mind when driving in winter conditions, but even with all the weight and all the power, these tires seem to keep it all under control about as well as any tire would. I drive in the inter-mountain west, around town and interstate traveling over the mountains and a couple trips up the mountain to ski. I've been in everything from ice storms to packed snow to unplowed snow up to 9 or 10 inches deep. No problems.

Can't comment on the staggered set up but I'm very happy with the handling and performance of the Ice and Snows. I've had them on a few of my Xs. No issues getting around in snow, and the handling is great on dry roads.

I had Scorpion Ice and Snows on my old X3 and they were fantastic - made the car feel invincible in winter. I have the Scorpion Winter on my X5, and although they're great on dry roads, they don't feel as confident in the icy stuff. Next time, I'm going for full winter traction instead of "performance" winters.

Would you say that the Scorpion ice & snow are better than the Scorpion winter?

The Scorpion Winters are a step up from the Ice and Snow, according to Pirelli.

To me, the Scorpion Ice and Snow are better than Scorpion Winter in winter conditions, but they squirm a little on dry pavement. The Winters have better dry road feel, but they're not as good in the sloppy stuff. It's all relative. If I'd been running summer tires the Winter would be a huge improvement, but in my opinion they're not a great deal better than the Scorpion Verde all seasons in snow and ice. They're better, but not the quantum leap that the Ice and Snow felt like to me.

I agree that they're better on dry roads, but I don't think so in deep snow. If memory serves, the Ice and Snows had a deeper tread with wider grooves and sharper tread blocks for more snow bite. They were a bit noisier than the Winters, too.

I was curious to see how the snow & ice compare to the winters as I'm impressed with the snow & ice tyres so far and been told there for more hardcore winter weather, but both prob very similar in performance I suppose.

Only had these on for one winter. I have them on now going into the second. I was very impressed with the ride and handling. We didn't put this through a lot of snow where we live but on Ice and even slush found they performed very well. I like the look of the tire as well. Overall I think it's a solid winter tire.

Unfortunately, I'm dealing with the exact same issue, so unless BMW or Pirelli can definitively state a fix, I would recommend serious caution outfitting these vehicles with winter tires that have no real tread wear warranty.

The only solution I have come to on my own is under inflate the rear tires vs. what BMW has on the door label. I'm seeing the same issue on Pirelli summer tires, just not quite so rapid a degradation.

They are “meh”. Conti, Michelin and Nokian are much better in snow.
