Wheel Bearing Issues

My car has about 3k miles and recently I noticed the front wheels were making a clicking noise when turning the wheel (the tighter the turn, the faster the clicking). Happened with both left and right turns and seems to have just started without warning.

Sent car in for service yesterday and was told this morning there were wheel bearing issues. I had searched here for an answer and found nothing, so figured I post this in case it helps anyone. Not exactly sure what the 'issues' are at this point.

Can post details from BMW paperwork once I pick the Beast up this afternoon if it helps anyone.

Cheers,
A.

I have this sound from 0km. For example if i try to climb a 10cm sidewalk with the wheels turned to max, even at the slowest speed it maxes a clunk noise.
Monday i am scheduled for 2000km service, and i will ask the dealer to check the bearings.

This may also be a constant velocity (CV) joint problem - the (costly !) part that transmits power from the transmission shaft across an angle to a front wheel.

The clicking (or rumbling or grating) noise usually increases with the angle of steering and the power transmitted and usually gets worse with time.

Common issue with current heavy M cars including M5/M6.
Many of owners have had them fixed. What they (dealers) need to do is to remove the bearing, lubricate and then reinstall them. You will be fine for another 5-10k before the clicking noise comes back again

Turns out the problem is back after less than 1000 miles since fix. Going back in on Monday...

They've currently got the car. Will let you know what they claim was the problem. They had it all day and said still unable to diagnose...supposed to have update by 1pm tomorrow.

Dammit... I was hoping it's a rock stuck on my tires. I've had that sound since day one. Now that I listened to it, it makes a clicking sound as if the ball bearing is being carried and drop every axle rotation. So it's one click every rotation.

Front Wheel Clicking Noise

I suspect this will become an issue for more of you guys after putting some miles on.

The first time in they removed/lubed the wheel bearings and "found special BMW Repair kit (P/N #83 19 2 298 825) to repair contact point between swivel bearing and wheel hub bearing, Work time to treat mating surface of wheel bearing/swivel bearing (both sides), Work-time to apply grease (P/N #83 23 0 417 754) to front right and left axle shafts, installed all components back into vehicle, test drove for 12 minutes and found no more noise coming from vehicle..." This was at 3100 miles.

Just got my baby back. 4700 miles. Went back in for identical issue as before. This time: "Cause: movement between the brake disc and the wheel bearing hub...noise coming from front axel, found SIB (34 08 14), sanded and cleaned the hub surface of both front left and right brake discs, and cleaned hub surface on vehicle as per SIB (34 08 14). Reassembled and test drove vehicle, noise no longer present, system operates as designed, diag code (34 11 00 57 00)..."

Hope this is useful to some of you...

Best,
A.

Yes, it is one click per wheel rotation.

this is really painful to read; I have a m4 convertible and experienced the "tin can noise" which has something to do with the e-brake causing some rubbing and a horrendous noise that emulates a tin can being dragged from behind the car onto the ground...

Is this issue anything like that? how noticeable is it?

No. This is just a very subtle tick every wheel rotation. The X5M brakes do squeal pretty loud at times.

Exactly. This is very clearly coming from the front wheels/axle are. I only notice it when windows/music is down. Almost sounds like you have a rock stuck in each of the front tires.

When did you first notice the noise on your M4? My wife and I are on the fence over picking up a 2015 M4 convertible in YMB. Absolutely gorgeous ride.

The clicking noise is on my new X5M. I had an F80 M3, loved it. Not sure on convertibles, it adds 500lbs to the weight to a very dynamic chassis which doesn't make the M4 as enjoyable. Plus, you're not allowed on the race track. If you like convertibles, 650i would be a better choice (IMHO). M6 vert would be nice too.

And to think, you could have been the first!

Hope the info I posted is useful. If anyone gets the problem resolved any other way, please add the specifics of the fix from your invoice in this thread. It would be great to have all info related to this issue in one place...

I'll bring it back to the dealer when she comes back from Dinan.

I'm demanding that they replace my brakes, as well. Unbelievable how bad these things squeal.

Hi guys ,

My F85 is 13 000 km , about 8000 miles.

I do have that issue ...
I don't remember since when I have this clic noise.
The dealer didn't notice anything when I brought it for the 2000 km maintenance.

I'll follow this post hoping to find the solution.

It's M brakes, some more squealing than others. But all high performance brakes squeal, even on my steel brakes on the F80 M3. It's better after a I wash the car and the blast the brake dust away once a week.

Thanks so much for the info! The Service Manager confirmed I have the same issue. They're ordering the parts and will fix it next week. Thanks again!!

BMW is obviously aware of the problem, but they're not planning on issuing a recall, so I suggest that all X5M owners check to see if they have this problem.

I complained about the squealing brakes, and they said it's just the way ///M brakes are.

Could this be simply due to the two piece rotor design? I remember reading something (i can't find it now) where a M technician was talking about the new X5M or M5 front brakes on how the two piece rotors has pins inside that can expand slightly based on heat and how it has a distinctive clicking sound when it does.
