Lightbulb ***NEW*** MY2016 Order Guide Canada- X5 40e and Diesel

Here is the MY2016 Order Guide for Canadian 40e and Diesel (as well as 35i and 50i).
The 2016 X5d is later in this bulletin after the e drive X5.

On the 40e: I have a feeling that the first month of production will be launch editions so we would not be able to amend them.
Also note that the 40e will have mechanical steering not the electronic power steering.
There is also an incentive (Rebate) for some provinces.

That's good news for you guys. I guess you'll go for the Diesel if production starts up in a few weeks in December. Is this a new diesel engine?

Dealerships hesitate to give any answers as of yet...so number of allocations per dealership and when the exact order and delivery would be are all very unclear at this point.
What a roller coaster we've had...maybe I was better off with biting the bullet and getting a Mercedes 7 seater diesel...what's it called again?!

So here's an analogy. Let me know if it makes sense to you guys:
The Diesel premium over a gasoline model is $1,500 in Canada.
So at $50 a month more on gas vs diesel, it will be 2.5 years before we break even with the initial value. Correct?
now adding the Time Value of Money to the equation, it would probably stretch my break even point to 3 years...
which is the time to move up to X7...
Who's with this and who is not?

I get it. I was there. I was talked out of the Diesel by my sales guy who said I don't do enough KM's and my brother who chipped his 535 loves the power of that engine. Hey, I was headed down that path and I always said when it came time to get rid of the 4.8L I would go to a Diesel. Obviously I didn't. Regardless of what you do, you can't go wrong. After having this X5 for 3 days (wife's back tonight) I love the vehicle. I don't know if I can even get into my Jeep tomorrow morning after driving this thing.

I'm with ya on the X7!

Don't talk a load of rubbish. They look ugly!

So you still moving forward on the 35i or you holding out for the Diesel?

Depends if you are leasing or buying, if you are leasing there are 2 things to consider. One is that the $1500.00 premium for diesel gets residualized so you really only pay about half of that (based on 50% residual and its somewhere around there on a 3 year). so your 2.5 year calculation will become just over 1 year.

The second thing to consider is the residual itself, the diesels tend to have a higher residual hence a lower lease payment. So it could easily be a small difference in payment, around $20 per month I would guess. but it would be easy to find by getting a quote on identical cars, but one being a diesel and the other a gas model.

Hope that made sense!

Less trips to the gas station is another benefit of diesel. I really don't like the chore. Filling up less is worth a lot to me.

I think arguments can be made for either engine and I'm not going to start. There is probably a thread on the 35i vs Diesel vs 40e vs 5.0 vs M. Regardless, I think they're great cars and we are fortunate that we have the money to drive them.

Of course!

But what I will say is interesting is that there is quite a high take rate on the 35i still. I find it interesting because if you pay attention to all the Benz SUVs, you barely see anything other than their 350 bluetec models. Every GL I see is a GL 350, and every ML I see is a ML350. You very rarely see a GL or ML 450 (their 6 cylinder gas model). I asked a friend who sells Mercedes and he says he sells 1 gas 6 cylinder model for every 10 or so diesel models.

On another note, we just picked up my wife's 2016 full size RR and found out they actually discontinued the 6 cylinder gas model for the full size, it is still available for the RR Sport, but not the full size. They said the take rate would be so small in comparison to the diesel that they stopped production for 2016 models.

I don't follow MB. There could be numerous reasons. Maybe their gas engines weren't very fuel efficient and didn't put the efforts into it like BMW. Our 35i is getting a great gas mileage and when it doesn't I'll ask my wife to have one less latte a week. I can tell you I'm not fond of MB's interior or exterior. Just not my cup of tea but I'm sure they have their loyal following as well.

Yes. It's cool...but the first orders are probably built and you can't amend them...
Also the 3rd row isn't available due to battery cavity, which is a big no no...

My apologies. I shouldn't be so harsh on MB. I actually do like them. They make my X5 look so good. I like getting beside them.

I'm buying (financing)...
But I do agree with you on the higher residual value of diesel...it even applies to resell value.
The only down side is the unclear delivery time of diesel...by the looks of it it is somewhere between January and February...

By the sounds of it they'll be a lot of MB's lined up for that one Diesel pump. Plan accordingly.

There are two things that I personally like a lot about our X35d -
- Torque, 429lb/ft, it's almost as good V8 X50i with 480lb/ft, it feels great!
- Paying less or same for diesel as regular gas and then driving in the city with 21 MPG (11L/100KM), and I don't know what highway numbers are.

There's one thing that I personally dislike about out X35d -
- Engine sounds like a tractor

I'd pick diesel again if I had to, hopefully M50d the next time
