DIY - X5 Badge/Emblem Swap

Here is my step by step pictures of swapping out the OEM chrome emblem to gloss black emblem I got from iND. iND uses OEM emblems and paints it to your liking.

Factory emblem...

Items used: 70% Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol, Microfiber cloth, automotive exterior tape or painters tape, dental floss or thin fishing line. Optional: hair drier to help remove the adhesives easier.

Mark the location of the factory emblem by creating a frame around it with painters tape.

Work the emblem with the dental floss in a sawing motion slowly.. you will more than likely break a few strings but keep working it and have patience.

If your car is fairly new, the adhesives should come off easily... I just used my fingers and rubbed the adhesives and peeled them off. I used a little of the rubbing alcohol to help with the removal.

After completely removing the adhesives, I used the rubbing alcohol to wipe the area down clean which helps with the bonding of the new badges.

The X!

All you do now is just line up the emblem from the left and right side of the frame and press firmly.

Nicely done! I like the look.

My current X6 is the first car I debadged, and I used dental floss as well. The adhesive gave me a bit of a hard time, but I used bug/tar remover to solve that problem.

Your idea to use rubbing alcohol is genius. I have a whole bottle of bug/tar remover that I will probably never use again since I haven't been straying too far from the NYC area like I did when I was younger, lol

Personally I'm not a fan of debadging, but I really like your black gloss emblem, especially with the the contrast against your space grey.

Nice work man. Now it's time to replace that roundel with a black one.

Looks great. I use 3M adhesive remover spray, it melts the adhesive away. =)

Thanks guys! I got the emblem from iND http://ind-distribution.com

You can purchase a cheaper X5 emblem from eBay / amazon but these are for E70 X5 and the emblems are bigger. I originally got one from amazon and when I compared it with the oem emblem, the size was significant and the way the F15 trunk is designed the emblem doesn't fit flush enough for me. After a few times of debating on other options ( plastic-dip and painting it myself ) I decided to just pay up for the iND version and I am a satisfied customer.

Thanks, Kzang, for the demo - really useful. On another note, I checked the link and spotted a pretty nice "3D Design Key Case". Does anyone have it?

Good write-up as usual @kzang.
Heat gun is your friend when it comes to debadging. Literally hit the emblem with 5-10secs from the gun and the floss or fishing line will slice through like a hot knife through butta. Makes residue removal a breeze as well.

Well done Kzang, glossy black looks much better than the stock one, is that the same size ? Or it's just looks smaller because of it's black? Btw I m thinking get the MPE, do you still enjoy the MPE? How's the sound when you long distance traveling in the car? Is that noticeable ?

The emblem is exactly the same size as the OEM because they are OEM and painted by iND. I think the black makes it look smaller like the color normally does with everything. On the MPE, yes I am thoroughly enjoying the sound and during highway speeds with the windows up, you can barely hear it in the cabin which is a plus in my book.

u can use fishing line if u have some, so it doesnt snap on u. and if ur car is fairly new u should be able to just peel off the emblems instead of cutting the adhesive.

Ditto and it says it won't harm cured automotive paint. I used it to remove a giant blob of pine pitch last week.
