remember basic physics? cold things contract and hot things expand? same thing goes for air. when air gets cold it contracts and pressure lowers as a result.

Hmmm... I'd be careful invoking basic physics!

Granted, colder air contracts, but wheels and tires contract too and basic physics doesn't easily tell you which one prevails.

But there's much more to it: all this tread assumes that the optimal tire pressure is independent from outside temperature - therefore, a colder temperature causes a lower tire pressure which must be corrected back to specs.

Is it really so?

If you start drilling into it, this assumption becomes far less obvious.

Discussing this here could be off topic - but it may turn out that the OP would be better advised to just reset the TPMS and enjoy a safer winter ride!

Anybody who checks their tire pressure even semi-regularly will observe tire pressure goes down when the weather turns colder. This is simple and inarguable. If it was 60 degrees last week and it's 30 degrees this week, I guarantee you your tire pressures will be a few pounds less than it was. It's simple common sense, and simple observation. Don't turn this into some esoteric discussion on physics and the ideal gas law, (unless you work for the NFL)

Huh? Do you know how cold it would have to be for your wheels to contract? Probably cold enough that the oil in the engine would solidify making driving inadvisable.

The whole premise of this thread is that tire pressure is DEPENDENT on ambient temperature, not independent of it.

You are absolutely right, a rough estimate shows that, at lowering ambient temperature, air contracts about 15 times faster than the inside volume of an aluminum + rubber wheel, so pressure drops if temperature drops - something we all already know but that basic physics, I respectfully submit, does not explain so obviously.

All the above, just trying to give a break to our OP - he came here asking a simple question and has essentially been declared unworthy of a BMW ownership!

Same thing happened to my 328i today. Apparently this low tire pressure problem when the temp drops is pervading the entire BMW brand...

Guys,

Question, today I was driving in my X5 and I got this loud "ding" sound and a bright orange "low fuel" warning message came up in the display. Is this bad? I think it may be time to just trade this thing in... Sorry I don't have a pic.

Don't worry, car may stop, but there is an undocumented workaround:

1. Position one foot on each pedal
2. Turn iDrive 3 steps right, 4 steps left, push twice
3. This activates pedals-to-xDrive emergency link
4. Start pedalling
5. Push SOS button to enact the "Eins, zwei..." voice prompt for optimal pedalling rhythm
6. Max seat ventilation will kick in after one minute
7. Do not use Launch Control in this configuration

Please keep us posted!

I hear you, and I do feel bad for the OP, but good grief, this is the MOST basic car care/maintenance task there is (besides adding gas to the fuel tank).

One of the following scenarios came to mind, in which case, he probably deserves everything he got:
  1. This is his first vehicle... ever
  2. He's 16, thinks he knows everything, and should be made to feel stupid sometimes (helps to keep him grounded)
  3. He's never RTFM, and instead spent the time he should have been RTFM on Insta, SnapChat and Twitter (while driving the X5 with under-inflated tires) reading drivvel from people seeking unwarranted attention from strangers
  4. He's a troll, in which case, I applaud him as this has been a funny thread

Next thing we'll see is a check control message that an oil change is due, with the same "is this bad" question.

BTW, loved your response to the low fuel light post... genius, and feebly copied above.

Hey man,
I'm loving the digital dashboard!
Did your x5 come with that?
Cause I know I have the most updated x5 which is a 2017..
Do I have to buy this dashboard separately?

Did he do a retrofit? Even '17 US-spec don't have the digital clusters as an option.

I will never understand why U.S doesn't get the digital instrument cluster while we get it standard in Canada

If you want a funny tire inflation story...was at a gas station about 2 years ago waiting on the air pump. Dude in front of me was taking forever on each tire. I got curious and looked - he had the pump set at 48psi!!!! (ford focus, stock wheels)

I made a comment stating that it seemed a bit high, and he said that the tire said to pump to a max of 55psi, and he thought he would just give it a little wiggle room. I asked if that's what his car asked for, mentioning the common door sticker, and he confirmed.

When he got in his car, I pointed to the sticker that stated 32psi and he responded "Well, I guess I'm a little high then, huh?" and then he drove off.

If he was that "high" I'm amazed he managed to "Focus" at all and you should never have allowed him to drive!

Dude seems to be not so upfront. Location says NYC, but whole car is in metric.

Long time no hear @lowlevelhell. I miss our debates about brake pads vs tires, etc.

Good catch regarding the OP. App doesn't show location. Maybe a Canuck that crosses the border often? Speedo ring shows km, but digital readout is in miles.
