Do I need brake upgrade for 21 inch wheels?
Hi everybody!
I'm relatively new in this forum. I'm going to put 21" wheels on my F15 M-package. What else should I upgrade for good car performance? Brakes, suspension, .........? Thanks! |

Welcome!
You don't "need" anything but rather the question is what do you want to change/improve upon and what is your budget? The M Performance Brakes Upgrade gives a significant improvement with much better brake feel. Even with no data to back it up my impression is that the X5 stops better and gives extra confidence compared to the stock brakes. Suspension wise there isn't much you could do besides lower it with ACS/Eibach/H&R springs which is mostly for looks. I would be shocked if springs did much for improving handling honestly. You can pretty much just put 21-22" wheels on the X5 and not do anything else really. Alan

Brakes upgrade
Hi guys!
I switched my winter wheels set to summer set. It is 21" 239 style powder coated in black. I got a new M performance brakes system. It will be installed on coming up Monday. I find out there are only 2 front calipers. Does anybody know why? Should I buy 2 rear ones to make it works better and looks better? Thanks. |

I believe the M Performance Brake Kit (Part# 34112348054) comes with both front and rear caliper sets, plus rotors (395mm front / 385mm rear)?

Those wheels looks great on the X5
Did you buy a new M Performance brake kit? if so it comes with 4 rotors and 4 brake calipers. No need to buy anything else. Also keep in mind that you need to have the car coded after installing the brakes or the brake pedal will feel spongy. You basically need to tell the cars ECU that you now have the MPBK installed.

Does it mean that BMW will code to USA default settings after new brakes installation? I changed a lot of options in my car with coding by myself just about a month ago... Can I do brakes coding by myself or its required BMW service guys to do that? Thanks. |

You can code it yourself. Shawsheridan on this forum walked me through coding the brakes but its been awhile so i don't remember. I posted instructions on how to do it on this forum somewhere.
If you are having the dealer do it then i would let them code it. It should NOT wipe out any of your own coding since they are just adding something and not recoding your entire ecu. All my coding was left intacted after coding for the brakes. MAKE SURE THIS IS DONE. YOUR BRAKES WILL FEEL LIKE THEY AREN'T WORKING PROPERLY UNTIL THE CODING IS DONE. I drove around for a few days without coding and the entire time I thought something was wrong until i saw a few threads on the 3 series forums saying the same thing after they got their MPBK installed without coding. After coding its night and day difference. Alan

What is the average price for instalation? BMW estimates for around 1200 + loaner, time for job is 2days. Would you recommend reliable mechanic in Brooklyn to install new brakes faster and less expansive? I'm in North Jersey just right across GW Bridge but willing to drive to BKLN. I also going to ask our forum for local NJ mechanic. |

That price is absurd. I can't remember exactly but my shop charged me under 700 for the install in Brooklyn. Another member here also went to my shop to have his MPBK installed as well. You just have to find someone to code your brakes since my shop doesn't do it.

Hey Max I really like the slight drop to go with 21's as the wheel gaps (especially the front) are more manageable. Check my thread for pictures.
