Considering my 1st BMW, x5
Been reading on BMW, X5 in particular for a quite a while, Being an OLD hot rodder I wanted more car then I need, X5M, but have a 2008 Jeep SRT8 and at 15 miles per gallon, it kills me and will have to go. Was thinking about the X5 but the big motor, the same thing, I have decided upon the Diesel, do a few performance things and have a engine I can enjoy. Have yet to sit in, drive or actually look at a BMW but that will change next week when I go look at a 2015 x5 35d M, black on black, I live in Wi, it spent the majority of it's time in the south so ideally no rust. It should have the N55, I realize, or read tuners don't like them as much as N54. The diesels are hard enough to find let alone w/the M package. I ordered a window sticker and it was $71,220.00 new. Along w/M sport package it has drivers assist package and premium package. It is not at a BMW dealership, kind of hoping they send it to one to be checked out... Anything in particular I should look for, carfax and experia were not a ton of help, has 99,000 miles on it. Their no haggle price is $22,600 Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a nice find, a 2015 35d M Sport with only 33K miles. I'm not as familiar with the diesel models, though I believe there were some emission system recalls, so you'd want to check on those. And surely some 35d owners will chime in here with more help. The 35d has the N57, the N55 is found in the 35i (as well as several other models throughout BMW's lineup at the time). If this isn't 'the one' there are others out there, assuming you're willing to travel or ship. Good luck. |

Thank you for the reply and pointing out a few of my mistakes. Lol Fat fingered the mileage, is 99,000 miles, am not to worried, it's a diesel. Thank you for pointing out that it is a N57, I thought I read that the 55 replaced the 54 in 2010 in the X5's , it's not the first time I have been wrong. |

For all BMW’s even ones from the 90’s and 2000’s the M-Sport Package only adds an Aerodynamic Bodykit, Different Exhaust Tips, Different Wheels, Sport Seats, and Paddle Shifters and a M-Sport Steering Wheel thars pulled out the F80/F82 M3/M4 (I don’t know why). For Tuning there is no difference in performance depending if you did Luxury Line, M-Sport, etc No difference at all.

My 2014 X5 35d , 95,000, is the best car I’ve ever owned. I recommend learn all the first order maintenance items to do yourself.
Learn the procedures to change out all of your “lifetime” fluids, front & rear Diff, transfer case fluid, transmission filter and fluid. Get an ODBC code reader ( w/ BIMMERLINK ,BimmerCode) and learn to monitor important parameters. As for oil, there are many differences of opinion, however Penzoil Euro Platinum L 5W-30 is what I’ve learned here and proven in use. As for diesel fuel additives, I have had measured success in combustion and longer intervals between diesel re-gen operations using GumOut Diesel System Treatment. Seems to beat the others as far as I have been able to measure. Let the engine warm up in cold climates before driving. After I changed all my “lifetime” fluids, my car drives like brand new and gets 33 MPG highway Local dealership where my car was originally purchased replaced my EGR Cooler as per the recall. Nice to hace Fantastic car, you’ll get a lot of satisfaction if you do your own 1rst order maintenance. |

Bought our ‘14 35d about 2 years ago and have added a bunch of miles. We’re now at 13x,000. I find the mileage claims to be always be higher than what I actually get and consider I drive pretty conservatively for the most part but we do a lot of mountain driving so going up and own hills probably eats that up. I feel like I get 25-27mpg when I calculate it out and am happy with that. If we ever go on a roadtrip that is much more flat I’ll probably track that to see what is actually observed. EGR recall is a big thing and it’s easy to see if it has been done. If it hasn’t, it won’t cost you anything but some down time so I wouldn’t let that put me off. I’ve always liked diesel and that was a big reason for me jumping on the one we got. Pretty highly optioned former google exec car that came with just about every box ticked besides massaging seats (if that was even an option?). It has become my girlfriend’s daily and I often regret giving it to her. I still think about replacing her car with something else and just having it to cycle between myself. I find the seats to be amazing for long drives and just wish they had the massager! Fully stock and has plenty of power for everything I’ve ever asked of it. The ZF is butter. It truly is a pleasurable car to eat up miles with. Good luck with your purchase and even if it’s a “no haggle” price I would say it doesn’t hurt to try!

Thanks for the reply, I am a do it yourselfer. Old hot rodder, have watched all the video's on replacing the fluids in the front and rear differentials and all that and the diesel oil change, spark plugs, I will do what I can, I know my limitations. As far as the maintenance history on the car I am going to see next week... how the hell can a BMW or any car for that matter hit 100,000 miles and have little to no service history, as far as what was done, from "Independent repair center"? I purchased a Car Fax and a Experian report and saw a lot of "Serviced" and a lot of "Independent repair facility", only twice did I see oil and filter changed. The Car Fax report concerning the 1st owner did not even mention a BMW dealer! Started out life in California, then to Arizona and VA, then Mn in the spring, sits at a ford dealer. I will probably go look at it but w/no service history...

Ordered myself a Ansel bm700 code reader, it is specific for BMW so that I can plug it in when I look at the car, just don't trust stealers. As mentioned earlier, it was bought then shipped to MN from Va. I can only assume that the previous owner, who I have briefly talked to, works at the dealer it is for sale at, checked it out as well as possible before spending the money to have it shipped to Mn.

BMW F15 X5 models will at some point require 2 items to be serviced:
- A/C evaporator; can fail as early as 36K miles - Rear air springs (if equipped) Otherwise, enjoy your X5! Great car. |
