F15 X5 Trailer Lights Not Working...Partially

So I had a trailer mishap and my trailer wire with the 7 plug end got cut in half. I put a new end on but the lights only come on when i turn the headlights on. Any thoughts on what would be causing that as I can't remember if it always worked that way.

I checked the wires at the plug to make sure they are getting voltage.

Trailer lights will only be on when the headlights are on or when it's dark, the break lights should function when the brakes are pressed.

And they are not coming on and neither are the turn signals

My advice would be to first test the connection at the hitch itself. You can get one of these as it works for both 4 pin and 7 pin:

If all is good there then it's your trailer wiring. A quick test would be to put your hazards on. The tail lights on the trailer (or lights on the tester) should flash
