K&N Air Filter
Hey everyone:
Just wanted to get thoughts from folks here on their experience with K & N filters and whether it really improved performance on their F15s. Thanks! |

I have one of those that in my 15 35iXdrive. To be honest, not much difference I can tell besides it makes a little bit more "intake" noise, maybe.

which engine?
i recently ordered the BMC filters for the 50i. i do not anticipate any hp gains or at least not noticeable ones but i am hoping for a bit more grunt at WOT since these vehicles are some what muted and no real exhaust options for it.

The K&N drop filter was popular with the Mustang crowds back in the day and IMO it did nothing. I've heard nothing but negative things about the filter one in particular being that the oil from the filter would screw up the MAF sensors. I don't know if this is true or not, it is just what I have read in the past.

from my previous experience, it adds some sounds, if you will run a higher boost tune, you will get more spooler sound. if you like it than go for it

No gain except the sound that people talked about. I have placed one in every car I used to own, didn't feel a squat of a difference in terms of power.

hahaha, yeah then you'll want the x5m.
i went from x5m to 50i and want to go back except it is a very nauseating vehicle for my passengers and they are the more important deciding factor in my purchase process than hp/fun.

Intakes and filters mod are one of the biggest gimmick for modern cars. In most cases, you'll be happy if you don't lose power. They do nothing for performance, maybe 5HP if that as our OEM box/filters are very efficient.
If you want a tiny bit more intake sound, BMC would be good. Just ensure you soak up any excess oil and let sit on paper towels overnight before installing. See how our intakes look like: http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1119273

f85 has a different oem air filter than the f15 50i motor however BMC uses the same part for both engines on the aftermarket side. i am curious to know what the difference is between the two oem filters besides shape and i noticed on the f85 bmw did not go with the charcoal pre-filters like they did on the e70 x5m. i removed those on my e70 but they were nowhere to be found on this version.

will NOT lose power for sure. only gain sound, and significant. if combined with a tune you will see a major difference in spooler sound. if thats the goal. not much sound addition in regards to grunt, as statement goes "no replacement for displacement"

the only way it would lose power (imo) is if it is one of those cheap "cold air intake" which is an oxymoronic name for it since in most applications they draw in more hot air than cold.
