Is it ok to use 265/50/R19 rather than 255?

Hello everyone,

I've been doing some modifications to my 2016 F15 X5 30d these past weeks.

I got my X5 with the standard 18x8.5 style 446 wheels and I'm jumping to the Style 449 (19"s). I'm not considering 20" wheels as the road conditions in my country are not like in the US or Europe.

But I was wondering if instead of using 255/50/R19 tires, may I install 265/50/R19 ? To your knowledge, would that be a problem on handling, or any other aspect?

I honestly thank you for your replies. Cheers!

i think it should fit, what i would do is get the exact rim specs (sorry too lazy to find them for you) and call tirerack.com and ask them, they are good in determining the range of tire that will fit. they are conservative however.

Thanks for the reply, I actually did that, talked with those guys at Tire Rack and as you said, they're pretty much conservative and always stick to the "oem specs".

I also own a M235i and when I upgraded to the OEM Performance wheels (19inch), the oem specs for its tires were 225/35 front (on 19x7.5 wheel) and 245/30 on the rear (on 19x8 wheel), I went 235/35 and 255/30 and so far no problems at all

But I wanted to get some comments/suggestions about those wheels on the X5 as I don't know if going 265/50/R19 would be "bad" for any particular reason. This is actually my first SUV so I'm a complete ignorant on the subject

I have 19" x 9" wheels on my m-sport. I am considering 255/50/19(front) and 285/45/19 (rear). I read somewhere on here that in Europe, there have staggered setup like that from the factory, but can't confirmed.

I did something similar on my 535i Xdrive. OEM sizes were 245/40/19. I went with 255/40/19s.

.

265/50 vs 255/50 should be no problem, just put the same size all around, since the 265
are 0.4" taller than the 255 .... four things to note:
  1. reduced choices of tire availability (22 vs 69 different models on tirerack)
  2. Conti DWS06 not avail in 265 (a favorite of those on the forum)
  3. less popular size = more difficult to find replacement urgently
  4. speedometer will read 1.4% slower than actual speed (in addition to any built in inaccuracy)

good luck!

Does that mean mileage readings on the car will be off as well, and would it void any warrantee work?

255/50/19 front and 285/45/19 rear should have perfect matching rotating diameter, which is good. Why such narrow tires on an X5, for winter?

Good move; the 449s look much nicer than the previous rims.

Glad to see you're from Guatemala; I visit Guatemala once or twice a year since I grew up there. X5s are so popular there. In terms of color, I mainly saw CBMs and silver ones. Never once saw a white one. Anyway, I really wish I could tint the windows here as dark as people do in Guate, but I'd get pulled over instantly..

Saludos desde California

Hey kanvas, thanks for the comments, I do like these wheels better than the stock ones too hehe. My X5 is not white, it's Glacier Silver btw , but there are plenty Mineral White's here. I had the windows tinted with 30% clarity, they're not "that" dark to be honest, they look like that in the pictures due to the light reflection.

The X5 really sells by itself here, way better than the Q7s and GLs

Good to know you lived here, saludos!!

I meant that generally, X5s over there are mostly either CBM or Silver, but no White ones around. I have a Mineral White, but Glacier Silver takes the cake. If I were to do it all over again, I'd pick Glacier Silver. It's such a sophisticated and beautiful color for the X5. It shows the body lines the best in my opinion.

Lexus LX570s are slowly making it to the streets as well.

Enjoy the car and watch out for the nasty potholes!

Thread revival (didn't see an answer when searching and thought this would be the most thread another member would find in the future):

Looking at using 467Ms as a winter set on an F15 X5 and going with 275/45s rather than the standard 255/50s. From a rim width perspective, it is actually an improvement per the Pirelli spec. Is anyone who is currently using 467s or equivalent (and preferably Pirelli Scorpion Winters) able to gauge if there would be sufficient strut clearance without a spacer?

OE: 255 Section Width: 10.4, Tread width: 8.6, Recommended Rim Width: 8"
Alt: 275 Section Width: 11, Tread Width: 10.6, Recommended Rim Width: 9"

From what I can gather, it would likely be roughly equivalent to a set of 611Ms with 285s (which have 14mm less clearance rim-to-strut and a ~.4" wider section width but 1" more narrow tread width), but better safe than sorry (especially given the different sidewall ratio).

Hey AlexGT, so glad you posted the pictures! I have a similar choice to make, and have the same 19" OEM rims as your new ones! I want to replace my 255/50R19 with all terrain 255/55R19 (the same size some Land Rover Discovery use). I would like a little more grip on gravel roads. And was wondering how it would look. I know they are not the same size of your 265s, but they should look pretty similar! Very nice, they do not look oversized at all!👍
