Thumbs up Better than expected gas milage

15 X5 xdrive35i, Recently drove from Cincinnati to Winston Salem NC on a single tank of gas very impressed with the MPG. I have traveled the same route for over 25 years and have never been able to make it without refueling at some point.

Drove most of the way in economy mode but switched to sport when on some back roads in southern Ohio along the river. The more I drive it the more Im impressed with it.

Average MPG 26.1 according to the on board computer. I didn't baby it, I tend to drive a little spirited.

I have a '16 X5 3.5i w/8K miles on it. According to the trip computer, my lifetime average is 25.1 mpg, I run in ECO PRO mode most of the time. On my last road trip, done basically at the speed limit, the trip computer indicated I averaged 31.5 mpg. I am surprised at the MPG's I can get out of this beast.

That's great mileage guys. I have left mine in comfort mode since new, lots of mixed driving including sitting in fast food drive through lanes and stop and go traffic. I'm right around 19 mpg over 780 miles.

Just did a 300 mile road trip on my 50i and averaged 23.9. It was mostly highway and a kept it in eco a lot...but gassed it hard when needed and used Sport mode for a few stretches.

I recently drove mine 230 miles in comfort mode on the freeway, mostly 73 mph with maybe 40 miles at 65 mph, some wind, the trip display said I averaged 26.3 mpg. I filled with gas and hand calculated closer to 25.3 mpg. Every time speed doubles wind resistance quadruples so I was impressed with the mileage at higher speeds.

I understand the maths behind drag, but I've found in my 20 years of owning nothing but BMWs that each one has a "sweet spot" for mileage on the highway (other than running at 45mph). The 2002 M3 likes an indicated 85 (optimistic speedo so going a little slower). The 2011 E90 M3 excelled at an indicated 90 (undersized tires and an optimistic speedo, so going slower than that), and my just sold E53X5 seemed to like an indicated 80 (spot on speedo). Faster or slower and mileage suffered a bit. YMMV. I'm going to guess I found the best part of the RPM range. Frankly, I don't worry about gas mileage or I'd drive a Prius or Leaf.

I bought the 40e b/c I have extra solar power to put to work.

I find BMWs are more fuel efficient when going fast than slow... which is great since I like going fast.
