Fineline Oak or Dark Poplar?

My MY17 X5 build is finalized and I cannot change it. I originally wanted the fineline but the dealer told me its not popular and really doesn't look that good so I got talked into dark poplar. Whats your opinions???

It really comes down to what YOU like. But, to me, the Fineline Oak is stunning and different... and I think it contrasts beautifully with the ivory leather. Since you have dark leather, I don't have any reference. If your build can't be changed, I would stop second guessing myself and know that the build is going to be beautiful...

On another note, unless you've been assigned a VIN and your X5 is in production, why can't you change it?

Personally (and this decision is really personal) the poplar looks really fake to me. I had fineline oak in both my E70s. Fell into an X3 temporarily (long story) and it has poplar. Really don't like it.

If the dealer screwed it up, have them switch it out at their cost. It is not that big of a deal to change (I believe).

We've got Poplar in our E82, not really a fan. It'll be CF soon enough. As said above, comes down to personal preference. For me, I think all wood trims look cheesy, regardless of vehicle. But again, to each their own.

Who cares what the dealer thinks. They just don't want a weird car that they can't sell if you reject the purchase.

I chose oak after looking at them all, it was the best imo.

Another vote for oak. It's very dark and rich with a more linear grain than the poplar. I highly recommend it.

Being told since it has an "individual" leather order it cannot be changed and its not even scheduled for production till last week of August.

Sounds like BS. The wood trim is not individual, right? Just the leather? I'd push them to change the wood. I too have fine line oak and it looks great to me. I really didn't care for poplar, but it's your car...

Tell them you want to cancel the order, they'll magically find a way for you to change it.

+1... I'd refuse delivery and just order another one. If they say no, then walk to another dealer. If you are limited on dealership in your area, find one in another state.

And IMO Poplar wood trim makes the interior look like a Buick.. I'd prefer zero wood trims in a BMW.

Individual orders cannot be modified once accepted (incl. switching around the non-Individual options). Sorry, OP. I know a few folks over on the F8x forums have tried a workaround, but I don't think they've had success.

Everyone that gets into my x5 loves the fine line textured and rubs their hand on it, it's like courdoroy and it's flat, not glossy. I would consider it. I think poplar and glossy wood looks cheap. Your dealer has no taste.

Edit: sorry, just read that you cannot change. Bummer.

Took me reading a couple times to realize he couldn't change as well.

Sorry you are having second thoughts but, honestly, I think you are going to be quite happy with your X5. I think anyone who orders one goes through the same thought process at some point about their build... Some of us went through it on a daily basis. When I picked mine up I asked my dealer what she was going to do with all her free time now that I won't be calling all the time to discuss changes to my order.

No Changes :( I still have hope!

My CA was extremely firm with me in saying that the order was locked because it is an individual order, and considering that I called the next day after ordering to add the Adaptive M Suspension which he just got in by begging the people at the port. The "Cancel and Build me another one" tactic did not go well with a "No problem" but you will lose your $500 down payment.. So in the end, I'm living with my decision and will grow to like the Dark Poplar. I am however researching replacing the wood at a later date if I really do not like. Ebay is listing some kits for nearly 1k which is insane! Has anyone ever tried to replace it? Difficult?

Losing down payment? Did you pay by check or credit card? You can do a stop check or dispute...

You won't be able to replace it for $500, if it's that important just walk away from the deposit. 3 months in you'll say, I should have done it.

Or walk away and be ready give them $500. They will lose out on a lot more than $500 and probably call you back in a week giving you your money.

I've had the popular in all of my X5s. Get the oak!

I drove one with the oak recently, much nicer.

I went with fineline - very happy with it.
Aluminum is a good choice too.

I would've walked but it was an individual order so I understand the dealer position on how they would be able to move an order after I dumped it on them. I'll live with it for now..

30 days after picking up my X5 I don't notice or even think about the wood trim. There's not that much of it in the first place and there's so much cool stuff in the cabin and its so much fun to drive its no more important than the cigarette lighter I'll never use. That the sun glass holder is so puny it won't hold a pair of sunglasses is a WAY more annoying issue. Just thought I'd give you some words of encouragement. Don't let this sour your purchase.
