All-new Volvo V60 estate unveiled in Sweden
https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-ne...-release-date/
Not bad looking this new Volvo, IMO. Might be a contender to replace my 4GC in a few years time if the G20 turns out to be a disappointment i.e. wider, longer, softer, heavier etc For the UK, there will be two petrol engines, plus two PHEV options from 2019 – a T6 Twin Engine AWD producing 335bhp and a T8 Twin Engine AWD making 385bhp. All turbo charged 4 cyl engines, I guess

I love volvo’s current design language. Just not a fan of their modular engine.

Same here but the quality of the interior could step up a bit especially since they are not considering themselves a luxury brand.

Volvo's exterior and interior design is really strong - fresh and dynamic. Having sat in a couple of V90s recently, I prefer their interiors to anything from the Germans I reckon they're going to win quite a few sales from the main German brands with this new V60 However, they've a long way to go to catch up BMW on engine performance/emissions

I had a V70 2.5 T AWD for about 10 years. What a great car. Safe, comfortable and reasonable on fuel plus tons of cargo space. I'd have another one if they still made them.

Yeh, I had a couple of V70 D5s - with the most comfortable seats I've ever sat in

The technical innovations volvo currently makes are stunning. But comparing volvo's to bmw's is really apples and oranges. Volvo tunes their cars very much to a comfortable setting over handling where BMW does it the other way round. The new v60 is foremost bigger than the previous model, which lacked in bootspace compared to part of the competition.

It looks great.
I don’t like that they sandbagged the T8 a bit in this car, but I think it is because they are leaving more space for a V60R (and S60R) by the newly independent Polestar performance company. I suspect they will go with a hybrid this time, and probably aim for 450-ish hp. |

I thought Polestar has been around a good 20 years for volvo tuning and racing?

However, despite that they will now build there own Polestar branded (all electric) vehicles, they will still create R models for Volvo as I understand it. |

I hope they do that better than their last s60 polestar.
When they showed that concept to the press it was this crazy 500hp+ car that was beating all merc's c63amg, m4's etc in a dragrace without any efford, but when it finally came to market in 2016 it was this tuned down 350hp version, being more of a competitor to a 335i. (wel a 335i with coilovers and a bbk anyway) And judging on the 0-200kph benchmarks I even doubt that they have 350hp, having seen them take a good 20sec to reach 200kph, which is slow for a (relatively small) 4wd 350hp car. So to me that s60/v60 polestar was a bit of a fail especially due to that PR nono.

I agree and I felt similarly to you when they pulled the bait and switch; it was a big disappointment. I think the reason they backed off so much was the imminent death of the I6 engine. They knew they’d be switching to the I4 twin-charged engine half way through the lifespan of the model, and they also knew there was no way they be getting anywhere near 500hp from that engine alone. Although, they were able to improve on the I6’s numbers despite 1L less displacement, which was at least respectable, IMHO.
Anyway, now that they have the hybrid setup to work with, they should be able to get to 450hp I would bet. They did a Polestar tune for the XC90 T8 last year and that was 420hp. I have to believe they can hit 450hp with more development. Plus, they are specializing in electric propulsion now, so if they are given free reign to add more powerful electric motors, the sky is the limit really. Although that could also add more weight (more batteries) so they need to strike the right balance. |

Even back in 2010 ford released the focus RS500, having also 350hp out of the same volvo modular engine but with 500cc and one cylinder less (2,5L 5cyl) If a factory tuner than releases 6 years (!) later the same output but having to use 500cc more displacement, thats not exactly a noticeable efford. So indeed the 367hp out of the 2L 4cyl is a more noticeable efford and almost on par with something like the merc a45amg. The 4cyl also has a more modern 8 speed automatic. The first edition (with the 6cyl) I think had a rather slow and old fashioned 6 speed auto, which also didnt help acceleration performance of course. But compared to an m2 or an a45amg, the only thing a S60 or v60 polestar maybe has exta is a better factory options specced. I still doubt it can keep up with the m2 or a45amg performance wise.

https://blog.caranddriver.com/swedis...-cylinder-s60/ Mercedes next version of the 4 cylinder AMG engine is rumored to have hybrid assist as well, probably similar to their new inline six cylinder (which is also 48V). So these two may continue to converge on similar solutions. Of course, Mercedes still has other larger displacement engines with a lot more power while Volvo will continue to power their whole fleet with different versions of the I4, gradual relying more and more on hybrid assistance and eventually pure electric power. |

Yes volvo decided to ditch the 5 and 6cyl cars due to CO2 emissions.
In europe both cars and car companies are taxed with co2 emissions. Thats why 4+ cyl cars are realtively rare in europe. And as volvo mainly is a european market operator and smaller brand in general (in contrast to audi, bmw and mercedes who have a considreable US share, comparable with what volvo has in europe) it makes sense to focus on 4cyl engines. Too bad really as their 5 cyl engines were awesome and very very reliable (the 5cyl diesels were even used in boats (Penta), so massive operating hours)
