Initial estimate $15-17k, but for whatever reason owner thinks Honda wont be able to source parts until 2018? I dont know how it works, but I would think Honda made few extra bumpers, no?

stated value policy.

again, I doubt it.

I'm a field appraiser for an insurance company, and I'm not seeing a total loss in those photos. I always get a kick at the amount of misinformation in some of the 'crashed car' threads that are out there. Some of the comments on Jalopnik are so inaccurate it's comical.

I do feel bad for him too, I would be angry even if it were a base Civic, but to have it be a Type R that you waited and traveled for would put me in full melt-down mode.
Owner said it was finally declared a total loss

Not surprising, I just totaled my two year old Mazda 3 when a lady ran a red light and took off the bumper of my car. No air bags, I was stopped, just had to remove the bumper cover and throw it in the hatch and it drove fine.

One broken headlight, the munched bumper cover, a bent hood and that was it. Ended up being a bent motor cradle and a two month delay in parts that pushed it past 80%.

As an aside, driving it around for two days was priceless, people get the hell out of your way when you clearly have nothing to lose. Only downside was that the blinkers were in the bumper cover, so I had to keep an eye out for the constabulary.

As you mentioned, pity must have played a big role in this.
