Buying used 2014 X5 35i sDrive. Some questions.

Hi guys, I don't poist much but long time BMW owner. We found a used 2014 X535i sDrive with ~34,000 miles. Offered at local dealership and Carfax said 2 prev owners (1 year lease return and 2nd owner selling before warranty is up).

I can always extend the warranty but I'm more concerned about time in the shop.

I had a 2008 BMW 335i coupe and after the warranty was up, it averaged a shop visit every 3 months at $500-$800 a pop. I want to avoid that time wasted as much as possible.

I've done my Consumer Report/Edmunds, etc research and asked around but most reports were done in 2014-15 range.

3-4 yrs later, how's everyone X5's 35i holding up?

Others will chime in, but I came from e90 too and I can tell that it's same n55 engine that is well known and is a LOT better than n54 in terms of reliability. No specific issues. I would be more concerned with electronics as f15 has a lot more comfort and tech features compared to e9x

That been said I've read forum and so far f15 is doing great (except some initial issues with early models that are usually fixed via warranty during first years of ownership. Time will tell, but I think compared to your n54 335 - this is much more reliable

I traded in my 2015 35i with 40k miles. I never had any problems, only oil/filter changes.

That's pretty reassuring. Did you just upgrade to the M for fun factor?

this is my 3rd N55. 335, X1 35i and now the X5. I keep buying them for a reason. the previous 2 were tuned with 2 different tunes and I never had a single issue with either of them.

I just got my X5 and it's been nothing short of great, and I'm sure it will stay that way. it's not the fastest in the world but it's an awesome car in every other way.

good luck with your search.

They're awesome vehicles. I never had an issue with mine and it had the n55 motor, BMW has done a great job with this platform. If you haven't bought one yet, check out this place:

Good inventory and awesome selections available at dealers. Good luck with your search!

I have the N55 in two of my BMWs. One is a 2011 with 30,000 miles and the other is a 2015 with 43,500 miles. They have both been solid, although the loud ticking is something that oftentimes gives me pause. That being said, the ticking is apparently normal in the N55.

I had a 2011 f10 N55 with 80k miles without any problems. traded that car in for the 17 X5 same engine. Hopefully I will have the same success.

I would have concerns of 2014 model year since that is the first year production.. other than that the X5 is your typical BMW... My 2015 X5 has been into the dealer for steering wheel tilt malfunction several times, surround view camera malfunctioning, and other minor issues.

Everyone's mileage will vary. I traded in my 2014 because the warranty was coming to an end and I lost faith in the vehicle. The last issue (2 months ago) required 2+ weeks in the shop with some invasive engine work. From my experience I would not own this vehicle without warranty or be prepared to spend at least some of the extended warranty cost on potential repairs.

This being said, it could have just been the early days of the F15 X5 (mine was bought in Nov 2013).

What exactly was wrong? Was it 35i?

yes, 35i xdrive + MPPK

Caveat: i'm summarizing a fairly cryptic report and i'm not mechanically inclined.

let's see...this is from the printout I got post servicing:

1st visit (reason= CEL + oil around engine oil cap):
-camshaft had play up and down, bearings were found to have excessive wear, including bearing seats (very worn)
-bent electrodes of "few spark plugs"
-replaced cylinder head
-2 injectors not within acceptable parameters - replaced

2nd visit (same issue CEL):
-found misfire on cylinder 1, 3 & 4
-another faulty injector - replaced
-one of the replaced cylinders still misfiring - misfire traced to a faulty spark plug --> replaced

All said and done the car was in the shop for 2.5 weeks (including waiting for parts). I was told that it required ~12h of labor.
