Does the M burn oil?

Hey guys! New X5M owner here. I will make an official post when I can take some pictures. It has been raining non stop down here in Alabama this week.

I picked up my M on Monday. It was a demo car and had 5100 miles on it. It shows 2900 miles until my next schedule maintenance. Well tonight I got a message that I was 1 quart low on engine oil. I checked the oil level with the idrive system and sure enough it showed that it needed a quart as well. Within that I was able to access the manual and found the type of oil needed. I then called my service department to verify. Added a quart of 5w30 full synthetic and everything is back to normal. I am not sure if maybe it just did not get filled all the way or if there may be an issue. I wanted to check with other owners to see if oil use is normal in these high performance engines. Probably a dumb question but this is my first high performance car.

I am so addicted to this machine already and yes, I have been running it pretty hard the past 3 days if that helps to understand.

Thanks and I look forward to sharing info with you all.

OP, OW-30 is what they just added to mine. It says it on the interior of the hood. My oil signal came on just the other day telling me I was at minimal level. Well I check my oil consistently (once a week) so I was shocked to see this. I pulled over right away and did a reset through I-Drive and it showed it was a little above minimum and all back to green. I put a quart in anyway to be safe. When checking oil make sure to do a reset every now and then so you know exactly how much you have. I have 10,000 miles on and this is the first time I needed to add oil in between oil changes.

Mine needed a quart of oil somewhere around 13-14k miles I think. The dealer told me 0W30 only. This happened right after we left for a family vacation, a 6 hour road trip, and I had to go a couple of places to find someone that had 0W30.

I was unable to find 0w30. I ended up adding 5w30. The owners manual listed it as an alternative. The auto parts store person said that the first number was just the winter weight and should have no impact. That you can mix winter weights but not viscosities. Should I be concerned?

I don't think you should be concerned, the auto parts guy told you LOL, just kidding. you'll be fine just buy a few quarts of OW-30 the next time you bring car in for service. and keep it in the trunk.

Was out of town for a few days last month with our 2015 X5M with about 21,000 miles and got the oil below minimum message.

Called the closest BMW center which was less than 10 miles away.

Explained the iDrive message.

They said come over.

Pulled up. Gave them my particulars.

They came out with a liter. I opened the hood and they poured the liquid gold in. The same twin turbo labeled oil they sell when the oil is changed on the E60 M5 I have. I think I paid $13 per liter the last time I changed the M5 oil.

Never got out of the X5M. Almost faster than a Formula 1 pitstop.

If your X5M has the maintenance plan they cover you for your oil. At least they did for me this time.

Many miles of smiles....

BradBinNY, I couldn't believe when I went to BMW parts department to get a quart of oil the parts department guy asked the year and mileage of my X5M and told me to bring it into service shop and they'll add the oil. No charge. Like you said a pit stop. Pretty cool.

I will certainly go to the dealer next time for sure. This time I could not have made it before they closed. I was freaking out a little to be honest.

sevretariat I did get a chuckle out of your comment concerning the auto parts clerk. Trust me when I say that I had that same thought when I was pouring the oil he said was ok into the beast.

I have put 11,000 miles on my M. Second oil change is due and I have had to add a total of 3 quarts. Car had 16,000 miles total. I am taking it in tomorrow for tires and maintenance and will mention it to them. Anyone else's using oil at this point in its life? Is this just normal for this engine? Where is the oil going?

My X5m needed to have a quart added in July and then 2000 miles later in October.

The dealer added the quart each time.

I accept this as normal at least for my X5m.

Mine goes through a quart about every 5-6k miles. It is completely normal. I stopped by dealer which is not far from my house and they have in the reception of the service area always available to top vehicles as it is normal.

Dealer verified it was normal today and told me that it would be ok to add 2 quarts when the vehicle requests 1. I asked them for a couple of quarts and they had no issue giving them to me.

They burn more than my other BMWs do. I never need to add oil between oil changes. I have 25,000 miles on my X5M and the car told me last week oil was at minimum levels and to add 1 quart. It did this once before between oil changes. I don't worry about it

I definitely think it depends on how you drive it as well. Two of the times it required oil, the alert was displayed after a full throttle acceleration.

Whoever is still during break in - best advise is to seat rings properly - drive it a bit more aggressively than you normally do. In 50i same oil issue is due to first owner not breaking it in properly (not aggressive enough) and rings are never seated properly - that will result in more gap and more oil consumption down the road. Another issue is due to stock cats frying valve stem seals and making rubber rigid - results in oil sipping through and getting burned. This can only be maintained by changing oil often (not like BMW recommends lol) so valve stem seals are always getting proper lubrication (can also delete cats with DPs to lower temperature, but that's another story). In any case - oil will get burned depending on how you drive so IMHO it's normal (unless you start burning more than 1L per 700 miles)

I've added 3 times 1 liter of oil in 85 000 km (52 800 miles).

Not too bad ...
