Dealing with this right now. X5 M sport drive 35 with 49k miles. Will keep car until 75k miles or so and am toying with buying extended. Bought it for 5k on my E70 without ever using it once though 80k miles!

An extra few tanks of gas and there's the cost of a battery. How much does a battery cost? A couple hundred dollars? Big deal. Something that would normally have to be replaced anyway after 3 or 4 years needs to be replaced after 2 years. And the aggressive battery replacement program by BMW is really to avoid problems on what would have been a small percentage of owners. If you don't drive very short distances always, and then let it sit undriven for days at a time then drive only very short distances again, then it probably won't be a problem. And even if you do replace it after 2 years, that one thing compared to the overall cost of ownership is practically nothing. By itself I just don't think it's as much of an issue as it's been made out to be by some.
Having said that, I am a little nervous about keeping this thing past warranty. Not because a lot of stuff has gone wrong (it's been great, practically perfect) but because I know if something, anything, does go wrong, it will cost a small fortune to fix it. In considering keeping the car for 6 years instead of 4 years, replacing a battery is the least of the things I'm concerned about.
Having a 50i previously, I wasn't too concerned about the mileage or the additional cost it would take to maintain this vehicle. The cost of a battery is not the issue, to me the issue is having to replace the battery because the vehicle is/was not engineered from the get go. I've had an AMG and it didn't require a battery change. Look, that whole battery thing is just that, an issue and cars have different issues including AMG's. I'm looking at it from a different perspective where I live about 2 hours away from my BMW dealer. So if I need anything it's a 2 hour drive if there are no problems that would prevent it from being driven. The other thing is that I could trade this vehicle in and get a new one, BUT there is no more "free" maintenance. So you have this vehicle that will cost $80-90 thousand, no comp maintenance and a depreciation rate on par with a vehicle costing many thousands less than the 50i with service that's 2 hours away. I'll probably keep my vehicle 2 more years, get the maintenance package and probably bid farewell to the brand.

That doesn't seem TOO outrageous. A bit on the high side IMO but not that bad. I paid about 2700 for a 3 year 36K that starts once manufacturers warranty ends. Obviously being under warranty currently makes a difference in pricing.

What maintenance plan did you get for $2700. I'm being quoted $6k-$9k for 3years addl warranty which is pretty ridiculous imo

I have CPO warranty till 2020, after that I'll look into Route66 or I'll just take a reasonable risk and drive it for 4 more years. IMHO after that car will be 10 years old and all bets are off - I'll just sell it as-is or trade in. As far as I'm concerned n63tu engine is worth owning it

The thing is you don't buy V8 TwinPower from BMW to complain later about it been less reliable than Toyota Camry

Considering CPO (assuming you bought CPO) gives warranty till 2020 for free, you basically bought extra 2 years of warranty for $4200 - which is still not bad, but the thing is 60k miles may come earlier than 5 years unless you really drive less than 12k miles a year

Not CPO. Still under factory till February and it's 60k from now. So till 2021 or 81k miles which takes me through my loan on the vehicle which is all I wanted. If I sell early I can transfer or just apply to maybe the next BMW I get if I stick with bmw. Or sell remainder back.

Wait, was it after a lease? Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you buy it from a BMW dealer - you either buy it new or CPO or third choice is non-CPO vehicles that are usually older

Bought it from 3rd party dealer who buys a lot of BMW from dealer auctions. It was fresh off a lease and non CPO with 19k miles.

Not maintenance. I got warranty. 6-9k? Which is it for 5 years lol? There's a pretty big gap in between the two, are there different levels of coverage that differ in cost?

Warranty and maintenance plan are two different things. One covers oil changes fluids brakes etc. the warranty is if things break which naturally cost will cost more to cover (just replaced my iDrive controller for $1200 installed under warranty). I also know the extended warranty is based on vehicle mileage at the time of purchase. Higher the mileage. Higher chance of needing repairs. Higher initial cost. Etc

Anywhere I can look up necessary maintenance for my x5 to know ahead of time what to expect? I see on dashboard computer tells me next service is in 4000 miles, but no details whatsoever. I don't want surprises in dealership. I know at some mileage there is a lot to change, but at other mileage it's just oil and filter - so I was wondering if there's a table anywhere? Thanks in advance

Update: found this on bmw website

Engine oil Every 10,000-miles or 12 months
Fuel filters Every 60,000-miles
Oil filter Every 10,000-miles or 12 months
Air filter Every 60,000-miles
Coolant Every 10,000-miles or 12 months
Spark plugs Every 60,000-miles
Brake fluid First 30,000-miles, then every 60,000-miles there after

Everything looks reasonable, except coolant change every 10k miles - seems excessive?

This is great information. I have a 2015 with 43,500 on the ticker. Since I already have the maintenance warranty, I think it makes a lot of sense to hold on to the F15 and buy the extended warranty.

So did I read correctly that if I do decide to sell the F15 in the middle of the extended warranty period, that they'll refund me the unused portion?

Did you happen to receive any other quotes for your vehicle? Would be good to have an idea what folks are paying.

The air filter every 60k is insane and definitely wrong. At least my dealer last oil change told me they do it every other oil change sooooo ya. Maybe that's the cabin filter or something

I see. With my factory warranty expiring tomorrow, might have to start looking into these 3rd party ones.
