Picked up the X5 35d for 5 month or so now and recently just did a 1000km round trip with the car. The first thing that stood out must definitely be the fuel consumption. I averaged about 8.5L/km with 4 adults, luggage and mountain passes, I bet I could have achieved even better results on flat grounds. My car has the standard suspension with the 20inch option on Prielli. I thought the ride to be pretty good and we all thought the whole time in the car to be pretty comfortable. But the one major area that surprised me was how unstable and twitchy the car was at speed over 120km/hr. The steering felt extremely sensitive with minor movements resulting in the car twitchy and the car was having a hard time going in a straight line. Granted it would only happen at speed over 120km/hr, I thought my previous experience in a cayenne to be more planted and stable. Not sure if it's got anything to do with the 315 in the rear or with the electric steering.

from these two I'd suspect the tires more than the steering: having the standard styling 450 19" (255/50), the steering isn't over sensitive, nor does the car get twitchy, even at +200 km/h.
Did numerous trips to Germany and in many cases the rear passengers didn't even notice the high speed... It's just smooth sailing.

I've got about 7000km on the car, thread wouldn't be a factor. But would definitely get an alignment done

You have no idea how quick tread wears off when alignment is off.

I would be looking at inflation pressures. My 19" PIRELLIs have over 37 k miles and are rock solid at all speeds. My 35d has averaged 24.8 mpg since the first tank. Travelling it's not unusual to see 825 miles to empty. Yes, alignment IS critical.

I have 315 on rear, 20-inch, on the perfectly straight "Mexico" roads I tried 246km/h and it was dead stable. IMHO it's something with your car - could be alignment, could be something else

Thanks for all the inputs. Will definitely do an alignment on the car to see if that fixes the issue.

If there is not enough toe-in on the front wheels, the steering can get a little unstable. I try to have BMW set mine as close to .00" as possible typically ending up about .02". It's a little twitchy at that setting, but front tire wear is much better. A setting of .04" - .06" is significantly less twitchy, but the outside edges of the tires wear faster.

If I had to guess it'd be too much toe out on the rear or the front.
