Anyone build their own racing simulator?

I want to build one for myself now. I built my arcade cabinet setup so how hard could this really be?

Mine. I'm using an Oculus Rift instead of screens now. I didn't really build my own though. Just pieced things together over many years. BTW screens are going to be dead soon for sim racing. For me they already are. VR in it's current state is so immersive and the resolution is good enough to really enjoy sim racing with it and it will get better with each generation. You can piece together a sim rig for pretty cheap these days. There are so many options. I just highly recommend PC over consoles. You get a lot more upgradability and your hardware will outlast console generations.

Not as expensive as one would think especially if you consider the amount of money people spend on mods around here. I'd say everything is less than a full titanium exhaust for the M3. :P

If money is no object... Motion Sim or Force Dynamics
http://www.motion-sim.cz/new/?page=h...icle=7&menu=31

http://www.force-dynamics.com/

Force Dynamics is the absolute best of the best.
Roughly $28-85K

I've used the Force Dynamics 401 before at an entertainment show. It is absolutely amazing. They had the settings turned down a bit low since it was public but it was able to transition from smooth to absolutely spine breaking violent seamlessly. Got off that thing and felt like I forgot how to walk.

What game(s) are you using with the Oculus Rift? How is the experience? I've been thinking about doing a similar setup when I get back from Singapore (hopefully in the next few weeks... been too many months w/o driving).

I only use Assetto Corsa. Nothing else comes close to a real driving experience at the moment. VR is a complete game changer with racing simulators. You are literally in the car driving as opposed to looking at a flat screen. You get spacial awareness like you have in real life which makes judging corners very natural instead of having to learn to adapt to them like on a flat screen. The next step for me is 3dof motion. I plan on upgrading my setup in the next 6 months sometime. Just trying to figure out the best route for me.

Nope. Married with 2 kids (and a 3rd on the way). I just have an understanding wife. 2 of my cars are 2 seater sports cars too.

You can call them video games, but if you spend enough time on the track you'll realize the benefits of lots of seat time in driving simulators. Porsche and Ferrari both use Assetto Corsa as their simulator of choice at their factories. I've been using it as a tool to practice car control and learning how to get faster around corners and it has helped immensely. But yea people who don't know much about it all just see it as "video games".

I've actually used the Porsche ones. But yes while I don't think it's a "video game" she definitely does.

Just got the PS4 VR set with Drive Club and seems decent. No need for screens. 360 degree VR set up and got to really fool around with it last night and gave me the same nausea feeling I get sometimes on canyon runs. I have it set up with a playseats racing seat and Logitech G29 steering wheel. For the price I think it is a great value and will only get better. Gran Turismo will eventually come out with a VR edition.

I just got this as my first racing sim setup. I live in Chicago so space is slightly tight, but so far this rig is amazing! The fact that it folds up into virtually nothing is fantastic.

Setup:
Console: Xbox One
Games: Assetto Corsa, F1 2016, Forza Horizon 3 (not really good for the wheel)
Wheel Base: Fanatec CSL Elite (just released)
Rim: Fanatec CSL Elite Wheel
Pedals: Fanatec CSL Elite with Loadcell Brake
Rig: Playseat Challenge

I am having so much fun using this so far. I don't have the ability to get to the track often, so this definitely fills the void!
