Upgrade iDrive to version 5

Not sure if this is buried in the coding thread, but figure it should be its own thread....

I know there is talk on the bimmerfest F30 board about upgrading the iDrive interface to the new version 5 with Apple CarPlay support. Seems Bimmer-tech is on top of it, but don't have anything yet for other models.

Any thoughts on this subject?

It should be do-able.
Theoretically, you just need to retrofit the hardware, then inject the firmware.
The online features, only dealer can re-enable it I think.

That you need to do research.
Are you ready to spend at a minimum of $10k?
If you are, then you can proceed with the project.

you're far better off purchasing a new vehicle than trying to get this going. the money spent could be put towards the difference of a 17 if this feature is that needed. (IMO)

I think it is cost prohibitive much like retrofitting digital instrument cluster. $10K is a little off the mark. I think it is closer to $1-1.5K new. You need an NBT2 (NBT_EVO) Head unit and then an adapter to enable navigation/etc.

Umm, I think we aren't on the same page.

Only talking about the software, our NBT systems are only supplanted by NBT evo systems in the other cars. but from reading this thread, doesn't seem like it's a major hardware retrofit...

Though not sure what can be done on our non evo units.

Hmm, looks like it is just software upgrade.
You may want to contact them then.

If you already have HU_NBT2, then head unit does not need to be replaced. There is still different FSC scheme so new codes or emulator is required.

and coded again after every service visit to the dealer and of course them blaming you for doing a retrofit and saying your warranty is void because of an unauthorized installation etc. just more headache than it's worth. (IMO)
