Buying a used 150K+ mileage; Am I crazy?
Perfect record maintenance record.
Given the high mileage at 150K+ mileage on this vehicle, if I were to purchase this vehicle this weekend, what issues should I be looking for and what parts should I ask the dealer to replace prior to purchasing? https://www.4seasonscars.com/2014-bm...-94541/6855639 https://www.carfax.com/VehicleHistor...355&source=BUP Your thoughts are welcome! |

I would not hesitate much if it was another engine. The v8 can be problematic. First thing I would do is change all fluids including trans, transfer case, differentials.

I assume this X5 was on BMW's maintenance contract, so while it received a regular service, that service was the bare minimum. Plus earlier V8. Appears to be well equipped.
In summation, if you have experience and/or means to properly inspect before the purchase, go for it. |

As far as I remember this is your second post asking for advice on used X5. I don't quite understand your goal, do you want F15 no matter what but your budget is very limited? May be look at something simpler and cheaper? Acura MDX? Honda Pilot? Toyota Highlander? V8 with 150K miles is not going to be easy to keep up with if you are on the tight budget, even by just looking at the exhaust tip you can tell it burns oil faster than gas. If you are a BMW enthusiast with garage full of tools and a lot of free time for the right price this X5 may be can be a good buy for the right price. But if you need a daily commuter your plan to service every 10K miles at the dealership or indy shop, no this car is not for you. And it it overall expensive for 2014 V8 with 150K+ miles and accident on the title.

With this limited info, and for what my opinion is worth:
I would recommend buying this car if you are willing to put aside a solid chunk of cash for the maintenance items mentioned by KillFox above, at which point you may as well consider a lower mileage example. I also wouldn't recommend the 50i unless you are like me, and you REALLY want that extra kick. The 35i is more than enough for most consumers, and arguably more reliable. I might also recommend it to someone who has the time, and facilities to repair and maintain that N63TU V8 available to them. The engine itself is good enough, but all of the ancillary components in the engine bay are what can ruin everything for you. Fuel injectors, turbochargers, plastic hoses, plastic vents, plastic reservoirs, wiring looms, seals, etc. all of which are surrounding a flaming hot V8 engine in a compact space. These parts don't cope well with the heat and abuse, and they do indeed fail. You'd need to keep up on that, or you very well might lose the entire engine. That's where you will lose your shirt if you aren't prepared. I would not recommend owning a 150K mile 50i if you are planning to rely on repair shops or the dealership for issues you will run into. I also wouldn't recommend it if you are expecting it to continue performing perfectly with minimal effort on your end, it probably won't. As with any car, it's a gamble. There are certainly people who own these cars near or above that mileage who fare well. However, 150,000 miles on an engine, transmission, running gear, paintwork, interior, etc. cannot be easily reversed. There will be plenty of items that are worn out, regardless of the maintenance history. Generalizing the brand as a whole is pointless, and broad statements like "V8s are bad" or "A Cheap BMW is expensive to own" are worthless as an opinion. There are plenty of BMW models that will make 150,000 rather easily, and keep going just fine. There are other models that just don't hold up as well, and people love to yap about the bad experience they had, or heard about. There are also people like me who've had a pretty easy experience with every model I've been through, save for a few big hits. Lastly, 20 grand is not "cheap" for your average used car. It's cheap for an X5, but it's still a lot of money to put on the line for something you are unsure of. Last edited by ProjektAutoScott; 10-03-2020 at 06:12 PM.. Reason: spelling |

Are you on a tight budget? Or you just like to wrench on cars?
There's an endless # of F15 X5's on the market, why buy one with 150K+ miles unless you're really looking to buy cheap? And maybe you are, just asking... |

Regardless of mileage, it's too expensive. Maybe worth $8k.

No not that one
Hope you didn't buy that car, but it's a free country. Pending the results of next month anyway.
Start hanging out on the auction sites. Find an X5 like this one: https://carsandbids.com/auctions/K1d...w-x5-xdrive35i
