Need Help on making decision on purchase
Hi everyone, fist time ever post. I am looking to purchase a used X5 35D but I am not having any luck with the open recall and no one really likes to lower the prices on used vehicles anymore. (Damn you Autonation and Carmax!!) I have my mind set on a diesel as I test drove it and it just drives completely different than a 35i. I guess its the torque, plus the MPG is awesome. I just want an x5 that has good pick up and has good aesthetics like M Sport body etc.....
My question is as follows. If drive-ability and looks are priority, would you guys wait it out for the recall and get a used 15 X5 with 32k Miles M sport body etc. for about $39K or a new 18 X35i with an MPPK+MPE and another stage 1 tuning for example to bring up HP and torque. I can get a really good deal with a dealer loaner vehicle for about 40 OTD. If I go with the X35i, is it really a big difference with the MPPK+MPE and other performance mods? Does MPG take a hit at all? Is the extra tuning chip covered under warranty? I think I read about the Dinan stage 1. Are they worth it? You guys are awesome here and I value all your opinions highly. Help me join the club please guys. Thanks Happy Holidays. |

Well, No one can really answer this except you.
Some things to consider. The 3.5i is very reliable and a ‘18 will hold it’s value better than a ‘15. But, if you have driven the 3.5d and like the torque/drivability (who wouldn’t?), You may not be satisfied with anything else. The diesel will get better mileage and (around here anyway) it’s about the same price as premium. Don’t forget to compare options as well. A lot of folks dislike the standard suspension so look for one at least with air in the back and DDC. Some of the other options are nice as well like exec pkg., etc. Also, don’t forget to find a color you like! Personally I feel the X5 is underpowered with a 3.5i, but both of my X5’s have been V8’s so I’m certainly biased towards more power is better! |

Take the 35d M Sport and call it a day. Your ideal car would have been M50d, but it's not sold in US. With 50i you would not be happy with MPG, with 35i with power. So take 35d M Sport. If you can find 35d M Sport with DHP - you'll have a unicorn and will get mentioned in a Guinness worlds record book.

For me, I would go with the 18. I would not want to deal with recall concerns and, as noted, the 18 will retain value better. Ultimately, my preference is always to go for a newer model year.

If you are referring to that Diesel recall, well I can tell you that it did NOT affect all vehicles in that range...only certain ones apparently. Mine as for one, was never included in the recall. |

The egr recall that has no fix at the moment. It is keeping me from getting a nice used diesel. I feel that a CPO with 30k mile's is just as good as a new one and I can save probably $8k and have to do less aesthetic mods. Thanks guys. Keep it up.

The issues are going to be taken care of plus extension of warranty more than likely.

I just checked again and it seems like there are only around 10k vehicle that have been subject to this egr recall...mine as for one isn’t.

If you can find a diesel that checks all your boxes, don't let it get away. Make sure you are familiar with options available. Minimum spec in my opinion is comfort seats and Driver assist plus. MY16 likely to be slightly better value than 15 right now. Gluck |

Thanks Alpine, the problem is they wont sell it to me because of the recall. I dont really have patience. I want to sell my truck before I put more mileage on it and I am afraid they might send some of the ones I fell in love with to auction. Would you put a deposit on one that you like being that it is limbo and no one knows the ETA on the fix? Or should I just get a 35i with mppk and mpe? Can anyone chime in if they have mppk on if it is a big difference in performance please. I value all your opinions. thank you |

Why would a used vehicle at the beginning of the depreciation curve hold its value better than a 3 y.o. which already went through the initial (=biggest) drop? There was no LCI or anything that would make 18 that much better than 15 say 5 years from now.
