That's the way it is my Jeep and I'm guessing that the X5 does the same. I had the Seats on at the first heat level. Never tested to see if there was a connection between the seat heat level and the wheel...maybe?? If so, I would be very impressed.
This is my experience on mine.. It gets hot and then it tapers off and is kept warm.

We're about to get some snow and much colder temps, here in Denver. I'll run the measurements out to 30 minutes, with minute-to-minute checks. More to come.

I'm in Colorado Springs. And I have been very impressed with the both steering wheel and seat heaters. As others have said, mine seem to get very warm initially, then taper off a bit. Which is good, because even on level 1, I can only stand the seat heater on for a little while. For the steering wheel, I would rate it as "hot", not "warm". Very impressed. Mine is a 2015 35i non M sport

The fix for my car (to the best of my knowledge) had something to do with the steering column parts, which where changed and works great ever since.

i noticed on mine today, the higher the temp on the dash, the hotter the wheel got. If you have set to 80 degrees, it'll get warmer than if it was set to 72 degrees.

Are you saying that the heated steering wheel and potentially the heated seat temperature adjusts according to the climate controls in the car?

If BMW designed the heated steering wheel to coincide with the temperature and or seats then I'm really impressed. The other morning I noticed the steering wheel was warmer on one side and that's because the vent was pointed right at it.

Please confirm if that is how it works but I actually don't think that makes much sense because sometimes I want my hands and ass to be on full heat but I don't find the need to have the heater at full force blowing hot air at me.

Sorry, I didn't mean fan speed when I said full force, bad choice of words. I meant i don't need on HIGH or 28.0 (82f) but I may want my steering wheel and seats at full heat without having my heat at 28 degrees.

Does your steering wheel get hot? I test drove my car for 6km yesterday with the steering wheel heat on and it barely got warm, let alone hot.

I am currently driving my mother in laws 2014 535xi (non M Sport) and it gets pretty hot so I was shocked at how NOT hot the steering wheel is in the 2015 X5 M Sport. Wondering if this is normal because that would be a huge let down, I would say the steering was room temperate or maybe 1-2 degrees above that, but certainly not piping hot like some wheels I've experienced
I wish I had a mother in law who drove a BMW and which I could borrow!!!
my in-laws only borrow my vehicles!!!

Tested this yesterday and I can't determine that the heat level is variable based on the climates temp setting.

Bummer!

I'm pretty happy with the steering wheel heat but it would be cool if it was tied together somehow.

Heated wheel

I have the cold weather package in an X6 in Southern California. I usually turn on the heated steering wheel in warm weather, without the cabin heat on, because I like the feeling. It gets very warm even when the heat is not on in the cabin.

Heated Steering Wheel

Does anyone know if the heated steering wheel on a 2018 X5 turns off with the ignition or will it stay on and drain the battery if not turned off.

I would think the light indicates if it's on or turns off.

It definitely turns off, and just like heated seat car remembers settings for 15 min after it turned off.
PS my steering wheel gets pretty hot after about 5 min. What bothers me is that there is no indication on the dashboard that steering wheel heater is engaged. I mean with all this empty room would be nice to have it.

Dash notification was included on the 16+ I believe.
F15 wheel is a toasty one.
