Extended warranty?

Looking at buying a well appointed 2014 X5 35d. Perfect condition, all dealer maintenance. Buying from a private seller. Warranty has expired so I can't buy the extended warranty from the dealer. Is this a deal-breaker?

Over 50k miles...well on one hand a diesel can easily live 200k miles or at least they used to before they slapped all the pollution control crap on them. On the other hand if something goes wrong with a diesel it can be very expensive to fix. Then you have the you put bad fuel in it excuse some manufacturers use/abuse to deny warranty claims. I'll let others more experienced with BMW diesel's chime in.

Always a bit of a gamble. My father is on his fourth X5 (two E70s, one F15 and the fourth one delivered in August) and takes them all well over 100K miles before buying a new one. None of them (they have all been diesels) have ever given him any grief.

To clarify, the dealer said the warranty expired based on time (past the 2 years.) the car only has about 25k miles. Think I'll take the plunge tomorrow and buy it...

Agree with P1et, always a bit of a gamble with any used vehicle, especially a BMW. After my experience to date on this 2014, I would not own one outside of warranty. I purchased extended warranty that carries me to 150k (I'm at 76k now).

Not many would own a BMW after the warranty expires.... maintenance and repairs would skyrocket. Stewy with that many miles so far, how has your X5 held up? I'm curious to know if the cost of the extended warranty pay for itself yet?

I am overseas, stationed in Germany. Did a little more digging and found that the European warranty coverage of a US spec military auto purchase is 2 years and unlimited mileage, and that can be extended for 2 additional years at a cost but must be done within the first 2 years. This 2014 X5 was 1 month outside the upgrade window, so I'm screwed there. It still has the standard 4 yr/50k US warranty which can be extended (back in the States) but doesn't provide any coverage over here. Basically this means I have 2 years of no coverage at all. Too risky?

Depends. How good of a deal are you getting on the X5? If the deal is better than average, then you have that money set aside for potential issues that might arise in the next two years. But it's a gamble, no matter how you look at it.

I agree with P1et here... I would also add that typically BMW and most European cars are not that good when it comes to reliability.. things tend to break down a lot more than the Japanese cars... hence, why most people wouldn't want to own a BMW out of warranty comment earlier. Just weigh your risk versus reward and either take the plunge or walk away

Welcome to the 35d club. The diesel torque never gets old! I agree, it's a fantastic machine. Good luck with it!

Very nice. Congrats.

Where in Germany are you? I'm at Kelley... And we will be receiving our '16 35d in the next few days.

I was in kinda the same boat as you, although I brought my in-warranty US-spec F30 to Germany where it's out of warranty because of their 2yr/unlimited miles warranty. Maintenance here seems to be cheaper than in the states. For perspective, rear brake job (pads only), oil change, cabin microfilter change, and brake flush for $300. I thought that was pretty good. I do have a warranty out to 100k miles but that won't be of any use to me until I take her back to the states.

Enjoy your X5!!

Stuttgart is great! I'm in the KMC area. Thanks for the info on service pricing...I'm hoping I don't need anything beyond the routine stuff for now. Definitely can't wait to take in on some road trips! Love it so far...
