Help me I'm dumb...where is the oil filter??

Doing my first oil change on my x5....I'm doing it since the nearest dealer is in the city and I don't feel like driving all that way. I am seasoned in doing oil changes in Japanese cars and have never done one on a BMW. I have everything and set to go but can't find the oil filter! Yes I'm looking in the engine compartment. I have a gas 35i

Ahhhh. Got it. Ok oil is out. Now forgive me how to get the filter out of the housing? Do I take off that little gasket?

Never mind. Just pulled it. Should I replace both gaskets?

Last question. Is the torque for the oil drain plug really only 12 ft-lbs? Seems low

Not low. Do not overtorque the oil drain plug.

I think 18 ft-lb is correct for the oil drain bolt.

Thanks 5tony. I've looked all over the net and haven't come up with a definitive answer.
