Nappa vs. Merino

Other than price and color availability, what exactly is the difference between Nappa leather and Merino leather? It looks as though the Merino leathers have more desirable colors but it is also much more expensive. Is it more expensive due to the exclusivity of the colors or is there truly a difference in the quality of the leather?

I'm thinking to go with the Tarfufo extended merino leather, and i would like to know how best protect it? I wear jeans a lot and don't want to get stains in the leather. Any thoughts?

Probably best asked in a thread who's vehicle comes with that material. G05, F85, etc.

I have the taupe merino leather -- 6 months ownership. Best leather I have had in any of my 5 BMWs and worth the extra cost for me. I use the Zaino leather products for cleaning and conditioning. I had a bit of bluing from jeans that came off with the cleaning product. I cleaned and conditioned the leather when I took delivery so I'm not sure whether the blue came off because I cleaned/conditioned the leather right away or the cleaner would have done the trick either way.

I have heard of others usining a ceramic coating on the leather but I haven't been tempted by that. I'm hoping my leather will wear well with my regular cleaning and conditioning.

I know it's the "lower" quality leather, but I love my black Dakota. Feels amazing. Can't really tell a difference between it and Nappa, and I've sat in plenty of Nappa leather cars.
Merino, OTOH, you can definitely tell is more premium.

This is very far from the truth. Nappa and Dakota are night and day.

Nappa is very similar to Merino leather whereas Dakota is nothing like Nappa or Merino at all.

I had 3 BMWs, 2 with Dakota and 1 with Nappa which I currently have and it is a world of difference.

The Dakota is rugged and has a synthetic grain pattern to it.

The Nappa has a very fine grain and extremely smooth and soft surface.

Dakota is more durable and 'standard' and Nappa is more supple and luxurious.

I don't doubt that you're right, it's just that I don't recall BMWs with Nappa that I've ridden in feeling that different. Then again, I don't think I've actually owned one with Nappa, only ridden in them.

My POV is also a bit skewed because I came into my F15 directly from my 2006 E46 M3, and as well maintained as it has been, the poor leather is that thing can't come close to comparing with the Dakota in my 2015 X5 at this point.

Agree.

I have a Nappa on my car and I had a Dakota before.
There are lots of people complain about cracking their Dakota leather and my x5 had a same problems but Nappa doesn't crack it as Dakota.
I love my Nappa leather.
