PDC delivery of my new X5. Great experience

I ordered my X5 in November 2016 and it was built week 18. I just did my delivery at the Performance Center on Friday, June 2. The build took a while since I did a special color, Melbourne Red.

I ordered through Steve Thomas BMW -- David Avilla and his ever capable assistant Jimmy Bach. A huge thumbs up to both of those guys, they were fantastic to work with and made it so easy. Even though I'm in West Virginia and they are in Camarillo, CA it went off without a hitch. Truly a smooth process.

Jimmy pretty much talked me into doing the PDC delivery and I'm glad he did! It was so much fun.

Awesome.

Never seen an X5 in red. Not my preference but I'm getting tired of black so who knows what I go with next. (never will i get silver or gray).

Thanks for sharing.

Definitely would look killer on a Msport trim.. all that chrome just clashes with the red.

again, I think it's good and bad. It looks great on a M3, but on a X5 sized car....looks like a giant tomato...there I said it.

So many haterz here.

Maybe the red looks great on the Msport, as well. But at least you don't have all those silly fake M logos everywhere.

I like the red. The non-M colors are boring.

How did you convince BMW to paint it for you? I tried in 2016, but they wouldn't consider it. Did they charge you the $5000 Individual paint charge or something else?

I think the car looks fantastic! I hope you enjoy it, OP.

If you don't mind my asking, how much did it cost to order a special color?

Yes! That was such a good experience with Andy wasn't it? The guy was so calm and cool, and it really makes me want to go back and do the full day driving school. It was nice to meet you and your son. He seems like a very nice young man and an excellent driver for sure.

Hi, thanks for the nice comment. The special paint was $5200. It was no trouble to get it done other than the long wait time. David Aviles at Steve Thomas BMW put in the individual paint request to BMW Individual in New Jersey, and they contact the factory for approval. Once they get the go ahead and the price, it is just a matter of waiting for the build week.

They originally told David it would likely be November or December 2017! That would have made it a 2018 model. But somehow the build week got moved up to week 18 (late April).

I asked my local dealer - BMW of Sterling - about doing Melbourne Red in 2013, 2014, and 2015 and each time they said the factory said no. Maybe it was just good timing in 2016, or perhaps the policy on special paint changed, or perhaps going through David Aviles helped....maybe a combination of those factors? But in any case, when I went through David Aviles last fall and he contacted BMW individual, it was no problem at all.

The guys at the Performance Center told me that true individual colors wouldn't be possible on any of the X models since they aren't set up for that at the plant, but Melbourne Red and Long Beach blue are already colors they paint the X5M and X6M so they agreed to that color with no problem.

I had a hard time deciding between the Melbourne Red and Long Beach Blue. Both are bright, exciting colors.

Maybe I'll trade in my wife's RAV4 for an X1 or X3 in the blue. Or if I win the lottery I'll get an M3 and make her drive my X5 lol

I would have loved to have had Donington Gray, a X5M/X6M only color on my M Sport 35i, but I do not think I could have handled the expectionally long wait.

I meant to tell you, I did peak into the delivery bay prior to us departing for the factory tour. Congrats and enjoy!

DG is so close to Space Grey, most people will think its just another SG X5.... If I was going to pay $5K for a individual paint, it would be a color that stands out... LBB all the way

ehh... I saw a LBB X5M a few months ago. Don't get me wrong, it's striking and shouts "look at me".

Again, IMO, no issues with LBB with a $100k 560 HP beast....but on a plain poverty spec civic X5? ehh...
