Unhappy Transfer of Music from BMW hard drive to BMW hard drive

Apologies if this has already been covered but not managed to find it.

I exported music from the hard drive of a 6 series (2010 model) to a USB flash drive and am trying to add it back to a X5 (2016 model)

Currently when selecting the USB from the iDrive nothing can be viewed or played.

Any ideas or am I being an idiot?

How is the USB formatted? Can iDrive see the stick?
Are you sticking it in the center console storage are USB?
