so for about the same price I could get:

A) X6M and mini countryman
B) M3 and X4 M40i

wife driving the later on both
Think the M3 will be a lot more fun, but the X6M I could take everywhere with the family.

If true, that's awesome. But remember, this is the same car company that tends to embellish in all their marketing claims. Seems a bit dubious to make that statement without any proof to back it up.

which means that a lot of work was done to the chassis to achieve that time
Don't forget 50 ft lbs more of torque.

If Nurburgring times were important to you, why the HELL would you buy an X5M/X6M? If you bought a M3 or M4, you'd have $30,000 in your pocket, a lower lap time, and a better looking car.

Neither the SVR nor the Cayenne turbo are a match for the new F86.

Lets not lose grip of reality because we like BMW so much. The cayenne has always been superior to the X5 and X6. I believe that this would continue to be so. The facelifted turbo is 47hp down on the new xMs but it matches them on torque and is 90kg lighter. Porsche are the bosses of chassis and suspension tuning and I am convinced the cayenne would spank the beemers on the twisty stuff. And the turbo s has not even come out yet...

I think the new xm's are clean and are fast for what they are

However daily fuel stops will get annoying

And at least they still have a V8

Dude,

M3=Cheap
X6M= real sport/luxury

All you have to do is look at the cheap halogen light bulbs on the back of the car and let's not talk about the cheap looking plastics in the interior. Also, anyone can have an M3... This vehicle is for the real people with $$$ that doesn't mind spending on what he/she knows is worth.

Lets not forget they also switched from older RFTs to PSS non-RFTs and slightly increased the tire width. Given my experience replacing the factory RFTs on my Z4 this could very well be the most important factor here.

Next issue of Sport Auto has the Supertest of the M5 CP. We will get Nurburgring lap times then.

As of now I don't think we have any M5 CP lap times.

It's the traction!

No, it's not just HP. A lot of work has to go into the chassis for something big like this to move the way it does and it's not just increasing HP.
It is traction that helps the X6M. Owning a previous gen X6M and driving it on track I can say that it makes up a lot for the extra heft with the exit speeds of corners. Where's the RWD cousins struggle to put their power down the X models just go the minute you put your foot down and on faster corners you seem to carry a good deal of speed into them.

I applaud the X6M but also feel more progress could be made with traction on the RWD cousins that could make much better use of the other dynamic qualities.

Thanks for the for the help. I am struggling on whether to replace my current M6 with 30 Anniversay edition or X6M.

i have a x6m , its great that you can get these lap times out of something so big, yeah heaps of engineering has gone in.
but no one has ever gotten up early on a sunday morning and said, i think i'll take my 2 tonne truck for a punt up a windy road............ EVER
and if you have i think u need to see some one about this!
99.9% will stamp their authority at the traffic lights, and if you manage to find a cayenne turbo or ml63 next to you, you will tear them a new arse. and thats all that matters

Quite possibly.

This is how close it was between the current gen Cayenne and previous gen X5 M on a track:

seriously though, i don't find it enjoyable driving a truck hard. its just not fun
step back into a low slung coupe after running the truck up a winding road and you will never do it again!

Thank you for posting this. Power to Weight and Tires clearly explains it.
