His friend gave up trying to find the car after 5 days? I wonder what that conversation looked like.

Dude: Did you find my car yet?
Friend: Nope, been looking for 5 days, no dice. I give up.
Dude: How can you say you're just going to give up? Can I remind you that you didn't lose a CD or jacket, YOU LOST MY FRIGGIN CAR.
Friend: Whatever, it's not like I'm bloody Sherlock Holmes or something. Lost car is lost.
Dude: So you're literally just going to stop trying to find my car. That you lost.
Friend: Correctomundo
Dude: You suck. Please leave my house.
Friend: Naw mate, I was hoping I could keep crashing on your couch for a few more weeks. Also, you're out of crisps.

Wonder if the insurance paid out or what now.

I'm sorry, but I really think it's either drugs or dementia. No matter how big these parking structures are, you can find your car, even if you narrow it down to 2-3 of the lots or garages. Only reason he couldn't was he either didn't try hard enough, or was so fucked up out of his mind, he doesn't even know possibly where he could have left it or whether he even drove a car that day.

If I didn't experience the results of this first hand I would agree with you. But, we turned a car in to a lease broker that they lost! They couldn't remember which dealership they turned it in to, and it took 30 days to find it at the dealership that they searched twice. Parked in the same spot for a month.

Some parking structures in Socal show greens lights above open spots and you can enter your license plate at kiosk to pull up exact location.

If using credit card, you do not have to use Kiosk to exist closed lot. Kiosk just has additional features, like locating vehicle using cameras; it just would not work for me because I have no plates.

No. Just illegally driving without plates.

It's not that weird. When I lived there, a good number of the newish cars in my community garage had no plates and I know they didn't just buy their car. Legally you can go 90 days without plates (in fact it took almost 90 days to get mine) and up to 180 days that it really becomes an issue. The weird part about CA is the dealer can't issue you plates, so don't even have temporary ones and unless something serious happens, nobody will check... and odds are you can leave it in the trunk and get a fix-it ticket.

It's just when you start driving out of state, if the police don't know you're from CA (since you don't have plates), then it can be a problem. Ironically some places will give you a ticket if you don't run front plates (which are required), but don't [or can't] do anything if you don't have any plates.

I just hope you have insurance, Almaretto

If you order Black CA plates, it can take up to five months to receive. Yes, I have valid license and good insurance. I will probably put on my rear plates soon; I think a year without them is long enough. In 15+ years of driving, I have only been pulled over once and zero parking tickets.
