I would imagine a more flexible option would be to use non-studded winters and carry a set of chains/cables.
omg, yes, studded tires are amazing. I've driven them on an AWD car in Iceland in December before. It's grip on ice is unparalleled to even the best snow tire out there.

Only downside would be the noise, it sounds like you're driving on gravel the entire time.

Haha, yup. They apparently needed spacers this time since the 40e has different brakes vs. the non-hybrid X5s.

I almost went sideways twice on my 2017 x5 in yesterday's snow storm.... and now I learned that we have to get winter boots on this thing. That's annoying.

But thanks for the insight guys.

Have to say... nothing beat my volvos in the snow... they must have had santas help designing those awds

fwd based and fwd bias, less power, thinner wheels & tires, non-rft tires. all factors contributing to you not kicking out the rear of the vehicle or going sideways.

Well we got hit with about 8" of the white stuff this weekend. Our driveway slopes up to 20% uphill grade which was no real challenge for the Pirellis Ice and Snows. The combination of curb weight and decent compound made the X5 more sure-footed that my 14 Jeep Rubicon JKU on the stock Mud tires. All wheel drive FTW. The only downside is the sunken in look of the X-line wheels. Even with 15mm spacers in the rear and 5 up front it looks pathetic. lol

Can't wait for decent weather for the 20s to go on!

Round four. Got 11" last night. No real issues getting in/out or around. Def had to "gun" it to keep momentum through the powder when going up hills and inclines.

Portland, OR is getting slammed with snow and ice this year... not technically snow tires but I run Continental DWS' and have had zero issues climbing the hills around town... both during the storm and following.

Have been really pleased with these all purpose tires. Going on 10k miles and the "S" hasn't even worn down yet; I'd be approaching replacement with OEM's.

I took them up to Mt. Hood following a major blizzard last year and they also performed really well.

I ran them on my M3 and nearly every car in the last 4 years... and recommended to numerous folks in the office... one of which has driven his 3 series to the office in them every day.

There's no substitute for a true winter tire, but if you only want to run one tire all year, these are the best I've encountered.

This is true but what I found when I used DWS on my 07 Acura they worked fine the first winter but 2nd and 3rd winter not acceptable.
Not sure if you know this but the DryWetSnow wear indicator is the letters stamped into the tread. When the S is no longer visible they are only acceptable for dry and wet, when worn so that the W is no longer visible they are really only good as summers.

The DWS06 improved tread wear greatly versus the original DWS.

I know the DWS06s gat great reviews here and I'm not disputing that. Any tire with a 40K+ official tread wear warranty is too hard of a compound for me. While I won't go the other extreme and get PSSs, something with a 300-400 wear rating is perfect.

Not sure if they were DWS 06, purchased in 2011 or 2012 I can't remember exactly. My experience was definitely not with current versions of the tire, if they have improved the wear then maybe they will be better for snow longer.

Awesome pic iconoclast, that's advertisement quality right there.
