SOLVED.... How to remove center cup holders? Something rolling around underneath..
Something is loose rolling around underneath the cupholder in the center console. Every time I break or accelerate I can hear it rolling around, and it's making me nuts.
It's a F16 How do I take the center console apart so I can investigate and exterminate! RCK Last edited by RufussCkingston; 07-30-2015 at 09:10 PM.. |

It was a DIME!
So I got out my tools and hacked away..... It ended up being a DIME.... Rolling back and forth in a slot/groove.
Basically looked at the following pic: Do the following on each side of the center console. 1.)Remove top panel that is between center console storage doors (must be opened for access) and center console rear air vent using vinyl tool or other non-scratch tool. 2.) Detach panel at the rear of center console (part with rear AC controls) by pulling at the sides forcibly. 3.) Remove two screws on top and screw at each bottom corner to remove center console rear air vent as it has some prongs that hold the middle side vinyl section in place. 4.) Remove screw from middle carpet trim from end in footwell 5.) Remove middle carpet trim by pulling off (clips) 6.) Then remove upper vinyl trim (part 13) by pulling off (clips) from footwell portion back.... Be careful in the rear portion as it has a catch and needs to be slid off the back of the center console. 7.) Pull up on the front of part (8) which has the iDrive controller and surrounds the shifter. It's rough but will come out. Disconnect wires from idrive and park assist/camera buttons 8.) remove two screws that are attached to side leather bolster (part 15). 9.) Remove side bolster by lifting from the part closest to center compartment 10.) Remove 4 screws on the side that are screwed into cupholder (7) and side bolster holder as well as a screw that is next to the lighter/ashtray on top at the end of bolster holder piece. 11.) Pull up and side bolster holder comes out 12.) Remove screws at the front of the cupholder in front of the shifter. 13.) You should be able to lift up on the cupholder compartment and see with a flashlight what is underneath and remove it, most likely right down the center in a groove. * ...When you put the middle vinyl sections back on, make sure to slot it UNDER the portion of bottom carpet siding and not over it. Also, look for the rear clips on the bottom carpet portion when putting it back, as they need to be slid over some plastic so it goes flush. 1.)Remove top panel that is between center console storage doors (must be opened for access) and center console rear air vent using vinyl tool or other non-scratch tool. 2.) Thanks for this write up!!!
I did this today on my 2015 35d. In my case it was a quarter. It took me about 1hr 15 mins from start to finish. Only need a t20 torx screwdriver and a plastic pry tool. Only thing I would add is tape; I used painters tape to seal the seam and also placed bunched in wads of tape into the groove so that even if something did fall in there again, it would not be able to roll. So now an unlimited amount of change can fall down there and it won't get caught in the groove!! |

Thanks for the info! Much appreciated.
I had the coin problem which drove me mad of course. Whole Job took me about 2.5 hours, next time it would be less than an hour as I'm always nervous about breaking or scratching the trim. Gettiing the upper (aluminuim) trim off was a nightmare and replacing it was even worse. I snapped 2 plastic lugs but fortunately the screws and 1 remaining lug was enough to keep it all nice and tight. Ideally you need to remove the 2 glove box lids but this is also not starightforward. Good news is I am 3 euros richer! And the stupid, stupid slot is now filled so it cant happen again. Also Im now going to get carbon trim as replacing it is very easy (now!) Thanks again for the help, pictures etc. Chris |

I've been a lurker on here for a couple of years. I had the same issue with the change getting in that channel on my X5d and used RufussCkingston guide here. I made an account just to say thank you. I also had a lonely dime get in there and was able to successfully take apart and restore the console and add some painters tape in that channel as well. Seriously thanks. The noise was driving me nuts for the last few days and I didn't want to pay the dealer to $400+ dollars to do something I could do on my own not to mention getting an appointment.

Just curious, think this tool would work? I was thinking of going through the hole in the ash tray with this and hoping the coin catches.

hey guys,
if anybody is still struggling with their coins rolling under the cup holder, let me know there is a much easier way to get it out without the full center console disassembly) it's a 5 min job |

sorry, guys
have been out touch was busy flushing my atf here it is i assume you know how to pry out you center console plastic with idrive knob? if you don't know, let me know and i'll take a picture of that process no need to disconnect idrive then you need to remove gear selector block, it's four black T30 bolts again no need to disconnect electrical connector, just lay it over on passenger seat that's it, now you can see what's under your cup holders, (just close that cup holder curtain), it's like a door in your garage that groove where your coin sits is right between two vents now... if you don't see that d... coin, take your x5 for a short 1st gear ride, the coin will roll out to you in that groove no need to buy a miniature camera to see it or a magnet tool to fish it out besides tha magnet is useless for those dimes, cents & quaters BTW mine was a dime, i still keep it as souvenir let me know if above is not clear |
