Picked up new M50D, but no piped active sound. Can anyone confirm that this should be there and where the connection is located to check Thanks

on the X5M the active sound is more pronounced in sport mode so I would imagine the M50D would be the same if it has it.
There is a plug in the trunk that people undo to disable ASD. You can try to see if your car has it (search on the DIY on the F85M forum). When its off its a very noticeable difference.

i presume you mean for the better... what is the difference? on mine the vehicle is muted despite increasing in volume and decreasing in tone once broken-in.

Well it depends. If you want a more refined interior cabin noise (or lack of it) then turning off ASD is the way to go. The X5M was a lot quieter with it off. Like stock 35i quiet. I drove around like this for a few hours and realized without the ASD the car lost some of its visceral excitement. Sound is a big factor for me when it comes to driving so I prefer ASD on.
After I installed my Eisenmann race exhaust the car was naturally loud enough that I didn't need ASD anymore so I turned it back off. |

I am completely happy with everything on my M50D. However, this ASD thing is bugging me. I have just noticed an enhanced noise in Sport mode, but it's subtle. I drove a 3yr old one before this, as a test, and the ASD was noticeable in ECO and Comfort modes. So, the question is, does this ASD noise increase with a bedding in period? and I am assuming there is not volume control through any of the menu options? The reason I am not happy at the moment is that I actually thought the sound from the same engine I test drove was great. So, a little confused, bemused and need some answers from BMW, who I have asked and waiting for. I am sure the good folks on this site can provide some more insight, thank you.

On my X5 M50d, the active sound seems to kick in only then I chose Sport or Sport+.
There is no active sound on the default Comfort, or Eco mode, but for this to be sure, I would need to disable the system. |
