Hey guys my x5 and it came with one key. Dealer was not a authorized bmw dealer and was willing to buy a new key from Germany via vin#. Does it require programming at the dealer or is it something I can do on my own?

Pretty sure it will have to be programmed at the dealership. Hopefully the selling dealership will cover that cost as well.

I was in the same situation, purchased my X5 with one key FOB. My salesman ordered/bought the key FOB for me as well. I was told or I read on here (can't remember) that you have to have it programmed at a authorized BMW dealership and It cost a couple hundred dollars and it take 2 hours. Now, idk if you can do it on your own or not, but I had my vehicle in for scheduled maintenance on Saturday and asked if they could program my key FOB. When I went back to pick it up yesterday, they didn't program the FOB. I asked my SA about it. He took my vehicle and both FOBs and 5 minutes later it was programmed, no charge!

Isn't that what the little key icon on the right side of the steering wheel column is for?

They mentioned they will cover the cost. Every car should have two keys. I fought for it and they finally gave in. Moving forward if I ever purchase another car the first thing I will ask for is 2 fobs.

Wow 5 min I can deal with that but 2 hours that's crazy! Car is currently in the shop so hopefully I can drop off the key and get it done.

There are threads on this about people who need to get their keys programmed and that's what I read. They just need a working key and it can be done in the car hence the quick turnaround. When I ordered a third key, it was programmed for me so I do not know. There was no extra charge for the programming part, just the standard flat rate to order the keys.

It's funny how they look at you when you ask about the second key FOB! Really...who has only one key to a car??? I can see back in the day when all cars had regulars keys. Just go get another one made for a couple of dollars.

That's what I said too (2 hours!?!?) That's why I waited until I had to take it in for scheduled maintenance. My wife is the daily driver so she kept the one FOB.

i just went thru this as the 2015 X5 i bought only came with one key. Non bmw dealer bought the key at bmw of dallas for $500. guy said over the phone that programming would be another $200. i went to pick up the key and the parts guy said you can program it yourself. It is super easy, make sure your original key is away and that your car is unlocked. Then put the new key next to the key icon on the steering wheel column on the right hand side. Then start the car. Its just that easy and i would not pay $200, for less than 5 min of doing literally nothing. Hope this helps

one thing this only works with new keys .

New key doesn't require programming. I don't know the exact process, but I bought my 2015 this spring with only one key. Dealer ordered a new one, and I watched my salesman set it up in less than a minute when it arrived.

And they ripped you off for the keys too seeing they're $300 retail even less wholesale.

That little icon thing is where you placed your smart key if the battery is weak so you can start the car.

Yes but a brand new key requires programming only if u have comfort access. I guess I will see tomorrow when u go in and pick up the truck. Had some issues with it PDC malfunction and valve tronics failed. Only 7000 km.
