It's often difficult to perceive the size and scale of a new BMW vehicle in spy photos/videos without any other model by its side. To tell the size of the upcoming next generation BMW X5 (F15), we've now spied it next to both the current X5 (E70) and the current X3.

Compared to the current X5, the F15 X5 doesn't appear to be much larger, and any increase in size (at least with respect to height and width) doesn't seem to be very perceptible at this distance. The overall shape, silhouette, and roofline also don't appear to be a radical departure.

What we can count on changing is the styling. The F15's grilles will be larger, wider, and bolder than the current X5's (as seen in the previous spy photos recopied below).

The hood is said to sit flush with the larger/wider grilles. The headlights are supposed to be trapezoidal shaped and will connect to the headlights, like the F30 3 series (see sketch below by SCOTT26). The F15 will also adopt many of the new X model design cues from the X3 and X1.

The F15 X5 is expected to weigh less than the current E70 X5 and ride on a modified version of the F10 5 series chassis. Expect both diesel and gasoline 6-cylinder and 8-cylinder engine options. It will be introduced in late 2013 as a 2014 model.

We also recently spied the X5 F15's interior for the first time, revealing a free standing LCD screen and a touchpad iDrive button (coverage reposted below).

X5 (F15) Interior Spied

Following on the design of the new 6 series (F12/13), 1 series hatchback (F20/21) and new 3 series (F30), the next X5 will feature a large free-standing navigation/infotainment LCD screen. This screen looks to the 8.8 inch panel used in the 6 series and the all new 3 series.

Compared to the current X5 (E70), the new dashboard design has become more driver-centric (angled towards the driver), which has been another design element consistent throughout all the recent new BMW models. It will also be more upright, compared to the current X5's dashboard which angles and curves away sharply from the driver and passenger.

this will be awesome - updating the interior / technology and weight savings. I'm sure the ride quality will be improved also. the weight is the only main knock on the current e70. Count me in.

What's all the black and white camoflouge stuff supposed to do anyway? Keep from seeing new body contours and the like?

F15 with camo looks like X3 F25 with camo. Also the rear window is like x3, positioned higher.

nice, looks like theyre bringing the front end look of the 3er to the new x5. its a shame to see the E70 go, but this may be promising

Exactly it's supposed to trick your eyes. In my opinion it kind of works.

I've said it before and I'll say it again...

THAT IS NOT THE X5. Mark my words, it will turn out to be an X4.

youre somewhat right shvydkist.

its always an amalgamation of new and 'old' (that side on roofline is the same as the older one) - but never just the new on show (even if camouflaged)

here is somewhat of an example

take a look at this article

http://carscoop.blogspot.com.au/2011...t-snagged.html

then

for the final

I hope this isn't the 2014 X5 (F15)! The taillights are awful. Vertical lights on a broad boot is suicidal. There's too much bare space at the back. The taillights in the current E70 X5 are spread across the back of the car and look better because they make the area look more compact.
The F15's vertical lights leave too much space and have a comical look.
My advice to BMW is look before you leap. Toyota 4 Runners and Land Cruiser Prados have been sporting verticals for years. These 4WDs are not associated with finesse.
I cannot see why BMW want to follow Toyota's lead.
