atomic80, it is not for everybody.
But, it is like jailbreaking an iPhone or rooting an Android. It may void the warranty, but you get the most out of what you are paid for. I said "may" because the dealer won't know when you removed it. Same as the iPhone and Android, just restore it and they won't know if it has been jailbreaked or rooted.

Here's a way to add 50 horsepower. (although the example is a Jeep Cherokee, I bet it would work on a new X5 too!!):

http://www.angelfire.com/nc2/mycoffeecan/page1.html

The beauty of this option is that it is almost free!!

Just a warning on the last point- removing the piggy back won't preclude BMW from seeing - should they look- much higher than requested boost levels/more aggressive timing in the vehicles logs. Sure, it's not a smoking gun, but if they wanted to make an example out of someone running a piggy back (even if it had been removed), they probably could.

Yea, they will look into it.
Bunch of lazy people working at the stealership.
Brought in my F10 with JB4 Stage 1 triggered "Drivetrain Malfunction" a few times. I removed the JB and bring the car in, after couple days diagnosing, they said the MAF sensor went bad, so they replaced it.
Then first week in my F15, DME failure, but at first they just come to the conclusion that it was the HPFP.
Whenever I asked them what shows in the log, all they said, "nothing, everything is normal".
Moral of the story, if they don't see the mods, they can't blame it on the mods. But if they see some small mod, such as drop in K&N air filter, they can always use it as an excuse to cover their end.

Relatedly, we have a '12 VW GTI in our stable, and it's APR tuned almost from new and now has 30K miles. The driving experience is just fantastic - really wakes that car up. And it's been dead reliable. But apparently a high % of owners put a tune on those 2.0 Turbos. Our local Ohio dealer was saying they see so many they don't think much about it. I've taken our tuned car there for all service without question.

Yes, only those 2 connector needed.
This tuning chip may not legal is some state or country, that's why I have to put that disclaimer.
As far if it better than the MPPK, I can't give you answer since I never drive one with it.
But, I do can tell you if it does make a difference with it.

That's what you get with Diesel. You will gain Torque before Horses.
Anyway, correction on the JBD, it still need to be tested.
Anyone local interested, I will be getting a unit for testing.
PM me if you are interested.

This is inaccurate. A tune will not void your warranty. Legally, BMW can only deny specific warranty claims IF you have a problem AND they can pin it on the tune (blown charge pipe, prematurely warn valve springs, etc.).

That said, MPPK for me. I just don't think a piggy-back is sophisticated enough to be slapped on to our Bosche DMEs.

BMW new engines are still works the same as the older generation of engines.
They just encrypt the DME with a new encryption system where no one are able to crack it yet. Not even DINAN (who supposedly, part of BMW already) got an access to the ECU. It could be for security and reliability reason.
But, that doesn't make a piggy-back system is not sophisticated enough to work flawlessly and worth something.
Even DINAN finally gave up on trying to crack the DME and decided to jump on board with the rest of the piggy back market.
While MPPK, what I've heard, is just a code, a sticker, and a badged engine cover. So, if that is the case, someone sooner or later will be able to crack that code and MPPK will be free for all. Or maybe some hacker will sell them for half the price the dealer charge you.
Oh, my point is, BMW new encrypted highly sophisticated DME, doesn't change on how BMW new engines work. It is still an engine. Piston, fuel, air, spark, bang, there the smoke and power through the wheel.

Got the tune yesterday and couldn't get the plugs off for the life of me. I didn't want to forcefully yanking them off and risk breaking them in the process so I called Ben up to ask for some pointers. He was extremely helpful in giving me instructions so I think I will share it here just in case someone else might be having the same trouble as I did.
Instead of depressing the tab near the wires (circled in red), it was a lot easier for me to flip the tab at the end (circled in yellow) up with a small flat head screwdriver. This unlocks the plug and it slips right off without any effort. The installation took about 5 minutes after I figured out how to take those darn plugs off haha. Thanks a lot Ben

Good post . My friend had the exact issue with his MAP sensor on his 2014 X3 28i, and both Ben and I advised him with the same solution.

Sorry, meant X3 (typo). Yes, process is quite similar. Took him only 5 minutes after he figured out the MAP sensor unplugging part.

bumping this back up. I just ordered my JB4 and i was told I need to install the OBD2 port with the green and brown wire. Does this enable the stg2 or map2 functionality (6lbs of boost)? or is this only for other things?

You may want to contact them directly as I am no longer supporting their product.
