Surround View Help

Because the X6 is wide my wife panics a little when on roads and its a squeeze with the vehicle coming the other way. I had assumed surround View would help her but I can't seem to engage it in that situation.

Is there a way of turning it on when you need to squeeze by?

While traveling forward under about 15 mph or so you can press the "P" button on the console that activates the parking sensors. This will turn on the surround view.

It can be coded to be on at all speeds. At slow enough speeds, sensors will automatically turn it on. Mine do when approaching parking ticket kiosk.

As described, preferred view (top view/ rear view) will come up when pressing "P))." The camera button is for front or side view.

My car was ordered with surround view however I'm not able to activate it
All I get is a very basic overhead picture but not an actual overhead camera view like my wife has on her Mercedes? Her car has cameras on the wing mirrors as well as rear and front cameras but can't find them on my mirrors?
What am I doing wrong?

Your car has a camera on the bottom of the outside rear view mirror assemblies if you have "surround view" , or what we tell everyone out here, the"Google eye-in-the-sky view".

Funny about your description because I was at a car wash and this guys calls me over wondering how it works like if they had a satellite in the sky that had a bird's eye view, and why it worked under their awning.

The OEM settings disable surround view at:

Fwd speed >35kph (22mph)
Fwd distance >50m (54yards)

As mentioned it can be coded to stay on up to >255kph, >255m

You should have this view. Then, you can also individually pull up front or rear cameras.

This is different from the G030 & G012:

Found the cameras on the mirrors (small dome shaped under the mirror).
But can't get this overhead view on mine?
Is there a setting I have to engage to switch this on?
I haven't even attempted to start reading the manual yet, so sorry if this is obvious.

You can by hitting buttons to left of gear shift as well as toggling with idrive knob once in reverse.

When reversing you have to hit the iDrive controller to the left and uncheck rear view camera for the Surround view to pop up.

Unfortunately this resets every time so you need to do it when reversing every time. (or so I think)

When moving forward however, hitting P button when doing below 35Kmh will put on the Surround view also.

This is a very good explanation. My 2014 F15 did memorize the last setting and it went to birds view straight after shifting into reverse. Unfortunately in 2017 model this is not possible, you have to do above OR press the camera button before shifting in reverse.

Found it! Many thanks all
Must say its not as good as the Mercedes birds eye view in picture quality.
Also wish it came on automatically when switching into reverse
Not what I was expecting for the money I have paid for it.

Picture are better on the G12/G30.

View depends on firmware. Some software defaults to last view (top or rear), while others always revert to rear-view camera. Unfortunately, ID4 is easier to toggle compared to ID5 but you can switch between.

The default when putting the transmission into reverse is to activate the reverse camera because, well, you are backing up and it's more important to see what's behind the car (for example, a small child) than what's around it.

What version iDrive do you have ? as its been noticed that the later ones don't remember the settings but previous ones do, hence the need to do it every time in the 2017 models.

If vehicle does not remember preference, you can use buttons next to gear selector.
I am not sure if voice commands or hotkeys work for same purpose.

On mine all I have to do is press the iDrive center button and it switches from surround view to rear view or vice-versa.

On my '16 vehicles with ID4, toggling with Idrive Controller is easily done by pressing in to select. On ID5 vehicles, they have to bring up side sub-menu and then toggle.
