Advice on buying used X5
Hey guys, I'm planning to buy an X5 and saw a decent deal...
It's a 2016 xDrive35i - M Sport, it's only got 24,000km on it, and I can get it for $46,000 CAD after taxes from a Mazda dealership. Only thing is from the Carproof, it's indicating "front center" collision that happened during the 18,000km mark, and insurance has paid $28,000 CAD to fix. No further details regarding what was damaged or even shop it was repaired at is available... It's been inspected, and I know BMWs can cause a ridiculous amount to fix even simple things, but $28,000 still seems high. My main concern is if there was body frame or engine damage, etc. What do you think? |

I say keep looking. Why pick one that has been damaged? Unless your keeping it till dead. It would be harder to resell again too. Is it certified pre owned?

$28k to get something fixed from a front collision? airbags deployed?
That definitely raises some flags for me .. The mileage is great considering it's a '16. But if it was possible to get more information on the incident, that would be really helpful, I think. Any other packages on it? Good luck with the hunt!

Right?! They weren't able to tell me any other details. So no idea what the exactly type and extent of damage was. It's not certified as I cannot confirm whether or not it was BMW who did the repairs.
The intention is to drive this vehicle long-term, I won't be reselling it. I'm more worried about damage I can't see and having parts of it break down on me after BMW's service period ends. |

I know it's possible to get BMW to get it looked at prior to buying it. So you could do that for more peace of mind, if you were to go with it. Get it certified at a BMW dealership. It's pretty pricey, so I would suggest to do that if you were ready to go with this X5. They offer a couple of inspections, in your case with this certain X5, I would suggest to get the more in depth inspection.

I would say RUN.... These cars are so damn fickle anyhow... You are better off waiting and find the right deal on the right vehicle with a clean history. I know it took me 3 months to find exactly what I wanted for the price I was willing to pay. If you plan to keep it long term defiantly start off on the right foot.

A lot of people are hyper sensitive re accident records, so if you expect to be selling it while it's still in the 'premium' category (I'd say 150k miles, $10k price range), such record will be a factor. If you plan on running it to the ground and selling at scrap value aka Craigslist special, then who cares, look at the car actual condition.

I don't think I'd be taking a chance on this one. While the price seems great, that 28k repair could prove to be problematic. There are plenty of great X5's out there, keep searching.

I would generally say pass, but take it to Calgary BMW get it inspected.
As a reference my x5 got hit in a parking lot and when I say hit I use that turn loosely. A lady got out of her Jeep, did not put it gear or put the ebrake on... it rolled 25 feet and bumped my x5 it was -20 and it cracked the bumper... 7k later it was fixed... crazy Depending on what was hit, but Calgary BMW should be able to pull service records and damage...

I'd get a used BMW from a BMW dealer. Mine had high mileage, but coming from a reputable dealer- I felt better they would not sell me something with obvious problems.
IMO- a Mazda dealer will not care about the BMW reputation. You will probably really like the x5- get one with no potential problems. |

I'd say pass. Especially if it is coming from a Mazda dealer. They just want to get rid of the vehicle that was part of a trade probably.
I PM'd you. |

Pass as well. Not the type of car you want with a bad track record and for this money you can get a new X1 for instance or maybe X3.
