Use of lower octane fuel will cause the ECU to pull timing from the engine to prevent knocking, lowering power output and possibly increasing gas usage.

Exactly. You said it in fewer words than I did. I just don't understand why someone would pay twice the price for a car than they really need to, then try to save a buck, maybe a buck and a half on a fill up. It won't hurt anything if you have to use lower octane, or accidently use it, but I just don't understand why someone would do it willingly. All that money spent for a high performance vehicle, then dial it back and get less performance and less gas mileage...

Yes, 89 will not hurt your engine On a hot day at sea level will it produce its full rated power with 89, probably not. But on a very cold night at 6,000 feet above sea level it may produce full power on 89 ( though these turbo engines are more sensitive to octane ratings than the normally aspirated ones and probably need minimum 91 even in these conditions) If you want the full performance figures from your engine (power and consumption) at any regular altitude and temperature, use the highest octane you can get. Dont care about getting full performance and wanting to save a bit on gas, get 89. (US octane figures quoted, not euro type)
