Thankfully the X5M doesn't seem to have this issue at all.
Thanks. Time to move on.

I bet you are having a blast with the M, I'm glad it is free of this issue.

I just discovered I have the same issue on my 2015 35d msport. I have an appointment this week so I guess I'll get this looked at as well.

I've followed this thread since it started and I have been waiting for it to happen to my '16 35i built in Spartanburg, SC. Thankfully it hasn't had the issue yet, but while I was home for Mother's day I did notice that my Mom's '15 mineral white 35d had the door chips on both the driver's and passenger's side doors. Needless to say she'll be bringing it to the dealer and raising hell...

Just noticed this today on my '16 X5 built mid Nov. 2015. The car barely has over 2,000 miles on it. The paint isn't completely chipped, but it is definitely marred. Driver's side only. Materials expand with temperature, so I'm wondering if the tolerances are so close that extremely warm weather is enough to cause this problem. I'll check my wife's X5 when she gets home tonight. Its probably a bit more noticeable on black (mine) vs. hers (white).

Very interested to hear how this was resolved by anyone (via their dealer or otherwise).

I've had this same issue for a while. It's from the door rubbing the fender rubber every time the door is opened.

Has anyone had this successfully repaired by the dealer, and if so, what was involved? I'm not talking about touch up paint itself - I'm talking about the alignment issue that leads to the chipping in the first place?

So BMW is aware of the issue, it has to do with the plastic fenders expanding during the summer/heat, and a fix is being worked on. Hang tight

This sounds hard to believe. The cars I originally saw with this problem were purchased in late fall and damage started within months. Granted, LA fall/winter can be warm.
