Extended Service Contract - worth it??
Hey guys, just purchased a 2014 5.0 - excited to get in the truck, set to arrive sometime next week.
During the finance process, the dealer offered an extended service contract to complement the CPO warranty for about $2500 - I think I could have squeezed him some more. The car currently has 35k miles and I plan to drive it about 20k a year. My question is - is it worth it? How much do these cars cost to maintain (this is my first BMW) - the finance manager said the brakes on this particular car cost $3k - any truth to that? Thanks! |

rarely, IIRC, you need 2 brake rotor changes to get your money back for that extra year, likely not going to happen. A brake change is about $1k if you use OE parts and take it to an indy.

Are you saying you bought a service(warranty) contract or extended contract? There's a difference. What's the duration of the service contract in terms of miles over 4/50? Also, you can have a BMW dealer do the brakes for $1300 incl labor. I believe the brakes last 30-40k. Based on the fact you have 35k on the clock, you will probably need a brake change before 50...however, being a 2014, that should be covered(I believe). But there are also maintenance items to consider...brakes, oil, batteries, filters...etc. |

2014 F15's qualify for a 7 year/125000 mile extended maintenance contract. If you plan on having the vehicle for 4+ years buy it, like I did ($2800). Probably 2 brake jobs, 2 plug changes, fluids, filters, wipers, etc

Puckybadger, do you have some specifics comparing these such as what scheduled maintenance 125K miles is called for (that is covered by the maintenance package) and the cost vs. the cost of the package?

OEM brakes for all BMWs are expensive. There are cheaper (and arguably better) aftermarket options out there. |

If brakes are $1000 the plan will pay for 2. Plugs for the 4.4 are $500, then you get 2 sets (every 60K). Oil/filter every 10K @ $130 per, you get an extra 6. Other filters and at least one brake fluid flush. Its a value.

if you DIY, or use indy labor, it's only breakeven...if you sell your car or don't drive enough, it wouldn't have paid off.

We bought a 2014 35i with 38k 3 months ago. IIRC, the original owner had replaced a battery and front brakes, to that point in the cars life.
