Ceramic coating

I know some folks have done ceramic coating at a shop, but has anybody done it on his/her own? A lot of these pop up as ads, but am suspicious
I have found a good deal with 2-year protection, but just wondering if it's worth doing it myself.
I lean against it, but if anybody can share a personal experience from any type of coating, including wax, I'd be glad to read it.

I am going to do CP Cquartz UK on mine. Application is a bit tricky, but doable. There is a ton (8+ hours! depending on condition of paint) of effort in the prep, however: wash, strip, decon, clay, compound/polish, polish, wash, paint prep, then coating. It's not for everyone but I enjoy working on my cars (wrenching and detailing, (maybe coding??)), a bit of a hobby. YMMV

Optimum Gloss Coat is probably the most user friendly self install crramic coating. I use it on my wheels and applied it to my mperf lip.

As Duke mentioned, you will want to do paint correction first, otherwise you’re jist sealing in scratches/swirls etc..

There are some "pokes" on the hood, which I will correct.
Don't see anything else.

Local guy offered me full detail with ceramic coating, 2 year manufacturer warranty, for $500, which I found very hard to believe, that's why I am seeking advice and DIY options.

This is too good to be true unless you have paint correction done recently. Did the local guy inspect the paint condition on your car before giving you the quote and how long will it take?

I had ceramic coating done (exterior only) a few years back with a brand new Cayman, small car with some paint correction to do, but it took the guy a full work day to do it and cost $650. He refused to give me a quote without seeing the car in person.

He saw the car, but did not inspect it per se. I do intend to fix all those blemishes before proceeding.
So you're saying I need to do paint protection before doing ceramic coating?
Based on my car specs from the factory, it does say "outer skin protection".
I assume that holds true for most BMWs.

No, paint correction and decontamination, otherwise you'll lock in scratches and swirls, if any, when your car is coated. The full inspection is key to fully determine the condition of your finish and steps required before coating. See AG chart below.

A good and well trained detailer should do the following (quotes from Detailer Domain):

•Provide a professional inspection of your vehicle's paintwork
•Remove surface contaminants ie:leftover adhesive, tree sap, tars, bugs, etc.
•Bring out the full potential of the paint by increasing gloss and smooth paint surface -> paint correction
•Provide a durable protection of the exterior surfaces using high quality sealants or coatings -> ceramic coating in this case

Thanks much for your help!
I definitely needed some orientation.
Prospective provider did tell he could handle some paint issues, but not pokes, obviously, so I will discuss w/him in detail.

Phil is the man! Detailer Domain does a great job. I plan on doing the ceramic on my next vehicle and will definitely go to Phil.

I’ve just had a quote for paint correction, followed by Gyeon ceramic for £350 on my F15 M50d. Is it worth doing?

I had mine paint corrected and Opti-Coat Pro applied for $800. They misquoted me but honored the price. Normally it’s closer to $1200. Opti-coat pro comes with a 5 yr warranty.

For gyeon that sounds reasonable. But it doesn’t require a licensed installer so I doubt they’ll do much if the coating fails in a few months.

It sounds like you're going to do it yourself. Is that the case?

Yes. I know that the CP CQ UK is not rated to last as long as the OC Pro version (not available to non-detail shops), but I'm ok with the multiple year expectation for it, even if I have to reapply in a couple of years. Plus, I have the equipment and supplies for all of the prep.

I would venture to do it myself too if I had the space to do it. Unfortunately living in a condo doesn’t make that possible. A bit envious that you’ll be able to do it yourself. It would have saved me some $$ if I could have.

Once you have the coating applied it should last 3-5 years so not sure whether the coating is ceramic? This does sound cheap, however is he providing a full paint correction service within this price?
I paid last year around £700 which included leather and alloy wheel protection and took in total two full days to do.

It's a tedious process indeed....oh well, 2 days w/o a car and £700 X 1.35 = $945 is little price to pay for vanity!

CQuartz requires at least 2 "reload" annually in order to keep the warranty going. My detailer charged me about $85 each time.
