Nice. This would work for me for 75% of time. However on road trips far from home not so much

Why wouldn't it work on road trips far from home?

He probably said that with the electric mode in mind.

But it seems like that's missing the whole point of what makes this evolution of the technology special.
-Electric cars just aren't there yet. For some people with specific needs in specific places, they work, but for most of us, just not there yet. Lack of range and lack of charging stations and the time it takes to charge are, and will be for some time, a huge hurdle that most are not willing to deal with. -Hybrid cars have never been worth it. For the extra expense, you get a few more miles per gallon. For most, it would take more than 10 years of ownership to just break even. -Plug in Hybrid, however is a whole 'nuther thing. Doesn't sound like much difference to many who aren't paying much attention, but the ability to go 18 miles and attain highway speeds just on electric without ever starting the engine gives it the good attributes of an all electric car for many of us. But with a seamlessly intigrated conventional engine, it doesn't have the negative issues of a full electric. Range is not an issue. Going on a long road trip? Just fill it up at gas stations along the way like a normal car. It sounds to me like they are making this thing so you can't hardly tell the difference between it and a conventional x35i when you're driving it. The whole point is to make it the best of both worlds, to make it seamless, so when somebody says it won't work for them for long road trips, I just don't understand.

The OP's first quote applies to the current ActiveHybrid line.
This applies to the new eDrive system: Quote:

Just remember, the electricity used to charge plug-in hybrids and full electrics comes mostly from burning coal and natural gas. The charging is usually at night when the solar panels are not working.

People also seem to forget about maintenance. I suspect (i don't know 100%) that the batteries don't have a lifetime warranty. Which means in 7-10years when they deteriorate (like ALL batteries do), they'll need to be replaced. Think a box full of double A's are overpriced??????

Not an x5 driver, but my commute is currently 2.2 miles, if I had one I could charge it at both home and work. Too cool.

Current battery issues for low daily driving resolved as electric range is low.
For X5e battery, the recharging means no need to buy trickle charger. However, new battery could be expensive after 4 years. |

This should be the plug in hybrid, not a pure electric drive X5. It should also have the N20 engine as well and the tame will be very good on it. Especially compared to the pure electric mode.

I can't understand why anyone would buy this instead of a Tesla model S or X.
If you want a X5, get one of the regular models. If you want an electric vehicle there are much better alternatives. Sorry BMW, I would love a big electric car from you with decent range (500+ km at least) bit you have some catching up to do. |

Forgive my stupidity but what is the black and white print vinyl on the front of the car? I see it all the time on test videos and reviews. Just wondering what that's all about.

During the latest stages of the design and development process, they have to drive test vehicles around in order to get real world final shakedown tests done. They try to camouflage the final design details of cars that haven't been officially launched yet, otherwise it kind of takes the punch out of their big launch campaigns at car shows or whatever other advertising campaign they have planned. If there was already a million uncamouflaged pictures of a new model out there, the car show launches or press releases that they control wouldn't be able to show you anything you haven't all ready seen.

I have no idea about charging stations in Oregon but I think you need to revise your knowledge about electric cars. Ohh... And there's lots of people living in more populated areas so hopefully you can understand why they would like one... |
