BMW X5 in Movies

Just watched The Ghost Writer and it had a short but pretty substantial role in the movie. I am curious, did you catch X5 if any other movies? We always see the sporty 3 or 5 series all the time, but this was the first time I noticed X5 being used, it was an E70 and a diesel, from the sound of it.

PS: I miss BMW Films.

I know there was a lot of BMW's in MI4 too, but I am talking about X5. I wonder if they made those M3's with some crappy interior and weak engines, because no way they would just produce them and let them destroy like that.

Believe it or not...most of these are just replicas . That's what I've seen. I saw this documentary once on how they build perfect replicas of cars for these movies. Makes sense because what kind of crazy person would destroy a 60k+ vehicle for a 1 minute scene in a movie?

Advertising and crazy budget.
MI4 was $145 Million.

Would it have made a big difference if it was $144 Million? Last I checked at $60k per M3 they comfortably destroy (completely destroy into pieces) about 17 M3's. Couple that at %50 write off for advertisement/publicity and about %25 in return for salvage/parts, I think it's doable. I think they need to destroy more X5's.

It's doable, but I think the replica idea is used more efficiently for destruction. When the car is being shown off or heard, then obviously they use the real deal because that's advertising/publicity. I'm sure also the scenes all use real ones until they get to the destruction scenes - kind of like a body double for action scenes.

I have that movie stored on my TiVo. I love it. I think its excruciating watching them tow that X5 off of the ferry. Now my son even says: they're not supposed to tow it like that!!

Exactly, my reaction "Don't do thaaaaaat". I don't know why they would do that, either release the hold or bring a flatbed.
