key fob error

Yesterday I started getting the key fob battery warning. Made one stop before the battery store and the car wouldn't start without placing the fob on the steering column.

Replaced the battery and still having the same issue. When I got home tried the other fob and it worked fine. Swapped the fob batteries and the fob that wasn't working still not working while the working fob continues to work. So I don't think it's the battery.

Any ideas or do I just need to bite the bullet and get a new fob. Hate to think what that might cost.

Vehicle is a 2015 X5 with about 60,000 miles I've had since new. I have replaced the batteries in both fobs once before.
